First win for apprentice Magglio Sanchez
Older brother Mychel has nearly 2,000
Magglio Sanchez needed only six career mounts to reach a place his older brother has visited nearly 2,000 times.
The 19-year-old apprentice jockey earned the first victory of his career Thursday at Parx Racing when he guided Atrocious to a rallying victory in the fourth race, a $7,500 claiming event at seven furlongs. The official Equibase chart noted that the winner “edged away late for Magglio Sanchez’s first victory.”

Sanchez, whose first name has appeared in Equibase charts as both “Magglio” and “Maglio” during his first two days of riding, made his professional debut on July 7. Through his first six starts, he has compiled a record of one win, one second and two thirds.
His first winner, Atrocious, rewarded his connections with a determined late run over a sloppy, sealed track. Breaking from post 9, the 5-year-old Ghostzapper gelding settled off the early pace before rallying outside entering the stretch and edging clear late under Sanchez. The victory came at odds of 23.80-1, returning backers $49.60, and was worth $18,000 to owner-trainer Angel Castillo Jr.
Atrocious improved his career record to four wins from 30 starts.
Sanchez is the younger brother of Mychel Sanchez, one of the leading riders in the Mid-Atlantic. Mychel Sanchez, also a native of Venezuela, has won nearly 2,000 races during his career and has been a perennial leader at Parx.
The younger Sanchez has made an encouraging start to his own career. In addition to Thursday’s breakthrough victory, he has been in the money in four of his first six rides and earned the traditional welcome jockeys give their fellow riders after their first win.
