Evenly matched group set for Laurel Futurity
Saturday’s $125,000 Laurel Futurity at Laurel Park has attracted a full and competitive field of 2-year-olds. Six entrants arrive as recent maiden winners on grass, and two colts with stakes experience will look to build on strong runs in the Kitten’s Joy Stakes earlier this month at Colonial Downs.
Leading that group is Jutland, trained by Kelsey Danner, who finished a determined second in the Kitten’s Joy. A son of Raging Bull, he already owns a turf win at Indiana Grand and ran evenly in two tries in stakes company, most recently when second as the favorite.
Just behind him that day was Kid Charlemagne, who pressed the pace before holding third. Trained by Jonathan Thomas, the son of By My Standards has shown grit in both his starts and figures to be forwardly placed again.
Among the maiden winners stepping into stakes company, Proton is one of the most intriguing. A Graham Motion trainee, he overcame traffic to score at Colonial Downs going short in August and looks to stretch out to a mile and a sixteenth.
Sunrise, for Todd Pletcher, brings Saratoga form, having battled gamely to break his maiden at a mile and a sixteenth in late July. While the speed figure was light for a Saratoga maiden event, the company can’t be discounted.
Green Light Day, trained by Kenny McPeek, rallied wide to take his turf debut at Colonial, while Parkes delivered a sharp late kick to win his unveiling over the Laurel course. Blue Suede Hooves, a debut winner at Delaware Park, showed speed before digging in late to hold on.
The performances of Jutland and Kid Charlemagne give them an edge in experience, but the lightly raced maiden winners add plenty of upside in one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most important fall tests for juveniles on grass.
