Mid-Atlantic three stars: July 21, 2025

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: JOURNALISM. Monmouth Park hosted some of the country’s top 3-year-olds, including Preakness Stakes winner Journalism, in Saturday’s Haskell Stakes. Sent off as the 2-5 favorite, Journalism made his backers sweat but called on all of his class to win by a half-length. He rated at the back of the pack early on, then angled three-wide in the stretch and challenged Gosger and Goal Oriented. Those two held their ground along the inside, but Journalism eventually worked his way past those two rivals for the victory, hitting the wire in 1.48.15 for 1 ⅛ miles. He improved to 4-for-6 on the season, with his only defeats runner-up efforts in the Derby and the Belmont Stakes. He became the first horse to pull off the Preakness-Haskell double since Exaggerator in 2016. He’s owned by a partnership led by Eclipse Thoroughbreds, trained by Mike McCarthy, and ridden by Umberto Rispoli.

SECOND STAR: REDISTRICTING. One race prior, Redistricting picked up his second stakes win of the Monmouth season with a 1 ½-length win in the United Nations Stakes. He rated off the pace under Flavien Prat, responded well when Prat asked him, and drew off to victory. He won the Monmouth Stakes in his previous outing, and looks as if he’s found his best self after a pair of stakes placings last year, but no stakes wins. Klaravich Stables Inc is the winning owner; Chad Brown the winning trainer.

THIRD STAR: RANDOMIZED. Brown won a total of four races on the Haskell undercard, including Klaravich-owned Randomized, who captured the Molly Pitcher Stakes by three lengths. She was sent straight to the lead under Prat and never looked back, hitting the wire in 1.42.75 for 1 1/16 miles. It was her first win since last year’s Ogden Phipps Stakes, and her sixth lifetime win in 13 races, with earnings of 1.7 million.

COLONIAL DOWNS

FIRST STAR: REPO ROCKS. Ran away with the washed-off Edward Evans Stakes on Friday, crushing a field of fellow Virginia-breds by 6 ½ lengths for his first victory of the season.

SECOND STAR: SHOWSTOPPERCOPPER. Made his first start off a six-month layoff in the Punch Line Stakes later on the Friday program, and won the off-the-grass contest by five lengths in gate-to-wire fashion.

THIRD STAR: NOQUESTIONABOUTIT. Pressed the pace and prevailed in Saturday’s Glenn Petty Stakes over 2-5 favorite Mystic Seaport.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: SPOTAFREEONE. Rallied from well out of it, thanks to a well-timed ride from Arnaldo Bocachica, to win Saturday’s Robert Leavitt Stakes and upset 2-5 choice Pascaline.

SECOND STAR: NO CHANGE. Beat a strong allowance field earlier on the Saturday card, for his first win of the season and 18th lifetime victory.

THIRD STAR: FASTER GATOR. After a trio of defeats in stakes races, he dropped back to allowance company and captured a non-winners of three contest by six lengths on Saturday.

DELAWARE PARK

FIRST STAR: MYSTIC LAKE. Lived up to the 1-20 hype with an impressive win in Thursday’s Dashing Beauty Stakes.

SECOND STAR: CYBERTIME. Improved to 6-for-6 on the year with a gate-to-wire win in a second-level sprint on Friday.

THIRD STAR: IN THEORY. Shook off the rust from a year-long layoff with a sharp 5 ¾-length win in Thursday’s feature, a second-level contest at six furlongs.

MONMOUTH PARK

FIRST STAR: JOURNALISM. Got up to win the Haskell and become yet another notable name in the Monmouth history books.

SECOND STAR: REDISTRICTING. Capped off a big day for Brown and Prat, as they teamed up to win the United Nations for the third time together; it was Brown’s sixth UN win.

THIRD STAR: RANDOMIZED. Showcased her speed to score in the Molly Pitcher.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: FOXY JUNIOR. A three-time stakes winner last year, she picked up her first victory of 2025 on Tuesday with an open allowance win in an exciting stretch battle with Confirmed Star.

SECOND STAR: FAR MO POWER. Got up in the last few jumps to win an open allowance sprint of his own later on the Tuesday card.

THIRD STAR: DUKE OF GLOUCESTER. Crushed a conditioned claiming field by 6 ½ lengths on Monday with an impressive Equibase figure of 102.
