Mid-Atlantic three stars: June 1, 2026

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: NEAT. Monmouth Park hosted a trio of stakes races on Saturday. The middle one, the Cliff Hanger Stakes, featured a field of eight older males traveling 1 1/16 miles on the grass. Jersey-bred There Are No Words opened up a long early lead and set a swift, ambitious pace. That set it up for the closers, including Neat, sent off at 9-1 following a last-place finish in the Henry Clark Stakes at Laurel Park last out. He was kept towards the rail all the way by Reylu Gutierrez, who resisted the temptation to angle him into the two-path on the turn when There Are No Words began to fade. Fortunately for Neat, Gutierrez found an opening on the inside and surged through it. Odds-on choice Cosmic Year, who was in the four-path in the lane, closed with great interest and intent, but the trip made the difference, and Neat held on to win by a neck. He’s now a seven-time winner in 19 starts, including five stakes wins, and is less than $1,000 shy of becoming a million-dollar earner. He covered the distance on a firm track in 1:41.87 for owners Red White and Blue Racing LLC and CMNWLTH and trainer Rob Atras.

SECOND STAR: OZARA. Earlier on the Saturday card at Monmouth, six fillies and mares went 1 1/16 miles on the lawn in the Miss Liberty Stakes. Miguel Clement trainee Ozara made her 2026 debut a winning one with a determined half-length win. Long Ago made the early lead from the outside post and set comfortable early fractions. At the top of the stretch, she was still in front by a length, and it looked like she’d pull off the gate-to-wire upset. However, Ozara wore her down in the final sixteenth and won by a half-length, getting the distance in 1:43.15. She was a three-time stakes winner last year, including a victory in the grade 2 Ballston Spa Stakes last year, and is 8-for-16 lifetime. Manny Franco was up for owner Cheyenne Stables LLC.

THIRD STAR: LOVE YOU MORE. The Saturday feature at Delaware Park was the Rehoboth Stakes, featuring fillies and mares going six furlongs on the dirt. The second choice, Mega Mil, set the early pace, with third choice Beyond Belief in second. Odds-on favorite Haulin Ice overcame a bad start to sit just off of them in fourth. Haulin Ice hit the front in the stretch, but couldn’t sustain her move and faded to third. That set it up for Love You More, who stormed down the center of the track to win by a half-length. She’s been in sharp form since arriving in the Mid-Atlantic last summer, with four wins in her last five starts. Angel Cruz was up for owner Barry Schwartz and trainer Horacio De Paz.

LAUREL PARK

FIRST STAR: BARBADIAN RUNNER. After a big season at Laurel last year, he made his first start on the track this year a winning one by taking a third-level allowance route on Saturday.

SECOND STAR: SIEGE OF BOSTON. Sat a perfect trip off the pace and drew away to win a third-level allowance grass route earlier on the Saturday card.

THIRD STAR: WITTY. Continued his march towards millionaire status on Friday with a victory in an off-the-grass third-level allowance sprint.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: OVERNIGHT POW WOW. Led all the way in Saturday’s Original Gold Stakes for her first stakes win in a year and a half.

SECOND STAR: DELIGHTFUL DIXIE. Handled a starter optional claiming field easily on Thursday, leading all the way for her fourth victory in a row and her fifth in her last six races.

THIRD STAR: DANCE FOR GREEN. Sat a great trip to win a first-level allowance sprint on Thursday.

DELAWARE PARK

FIRST STAR: LOVE YOU MORE. One of the locals did good in the Rehoboth.

SECOND STAR: PACO LOPEZ. Pulled off riding hat tricks on Wednesday and Thursday and followed it up with a five-bagger on Friday.

THIRD STAR: KERNESS K. Won his fifth consecutive race on Wednesday, winning a starter optional claiming sprint by a nose with Lopez aboard.

MONMOUTH PARK

FIRST STAR: NEAT. Got the job done in the Cliff Hanger thanks to a fantastic ride from Reylu Gutierrez.

SECOND STAR: OZARA. Called on her class to wear down the leader and win the Miss Liberty.

THIRD STAR: THIRD COAST. Made a three-wide move and kicked away to win the Jersey Derby later on the Saturday card.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: A VOTRE SANTA. Led all the way in a starter optional claiming sprint on Monday.

SECOND STAR: ICONA MAMA. Got the trip and drew away to capture a first-level allowance sprint on Wednesday.

THIRD STAR: SHUBAGAIL. Rallied from far off the pace and won going away in a first-level, Pennsylvania-bred allowance sprint on Tuesday for her second consecutive victory.
