Mid-Atlantic three stars: May 25, 2026
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: JAMIE NESS. One of the Mid-Atlantic’s premier trainers, Jamie Ness, achieved a major career milestone on Wednesday when he won his 5,000th career race. He captured the 6th race at Delaware Park with Chelsea Wall, one of six winners for Ness that day in the region. The victory came just two minutes after Ness won race 4,999 at Parx with Bold Endeavor, and that may have been win #5,000 if not for a delay to the start of the Delaware race. As it was, Chelsea Wall sat off the pace and drew away to win by 3 1/2 lengths as the 2-5 favorite with Paco Lopez up, and in the process made Ness the ninth trainer in North American history to win 5,000 races. Ness won his first race at Canterbury Park in 1999, and has been a dominant trainer in the Mid-Atlantic for a decade and a half. He’s won the training title at Delaware each of the last 11 years, and at Parx for six consecutive years. Last year, he won 353 races, more than any trainer in the country, and is currently third in the national standings with 105 wins as of May 24.
SECOND STAR: YEDSIT HAZLEWOOD. Hazlewood, who often rides for Ness, had a banner day on Wednesday at Parx, with five wins in ten mounts. His first three victories on the day came with Ness-trained runners, as he captured race 2 with Assume Nothing, race 5 aboard Melt With You, and the 6th race on the aforementioned Bold Endeavor. He wasted no time in picking up the grand slam in race 7, winning on Michael Pino trainee Fussy Girl. In race 9, he rode Lovely Charm to a dominant 16 1/2-length win for trainer Miguel Penaloza, completing a five-bagger in the process. His big day brought him to 68 wins on the season, trailing only Mychel Sanchez in the rider standings.
THIRD STAR: NINETYPRCENTMADDIE. A competitive group of older males met in Tuesday’s feature at Parx, an open allowance route at one mile. Ninetyprcentmaddie, the very slight 5-2 favorite, improved to 2-for-2 on the year with a one-length victory. Speedyness, in his first start in 11 months, made the early lead and set honest fractions, going the first quarter-mile in 23.92 and the first half-mile in 46.75. He gave way in the stretch, and Ninetyprcentmaddie, who sat in third in the early stages, hit the front. Cadet Corps chased the leader home and cut into the margin somewhat, but Ninetyprcentmaddie held on, going the mile in 1:38. He won the Page McKenney Handicap in his previous start this year, and has won three stakes or stakes-quality races at Parx over the past 12 months. Abner Adorno rode the LC Racing LLC homebred gelding, who is trained by Butch Reid.
LAUREL PARK
FIRST STAR: PREACHA MEYERS. Won a first-level allowance route in the Friday mud for his fourth victory in a row.
SECOND STAR: CHANGE MY WORLD. After a few runner-up tries this year, he broke through to win a Maryland-restricted first-level allowance sprint on Saturday.
THIRD STAR: CREED’S VISION. Made short work of a washed-off first-level allowance sprint field earlier on the Saturday card.
CHARLES TOWN
Racing at Charles Town was cancelled this past week due to a water main break.
DELAWARE PARK
FIRST STAR: JAMIE NESS. Reached heights that few trainers have with his 5,000th career win, and he has his sights set on making that total much larger.
SECOND STAR: SPIKEZONE. Won an open allowance sprint on Wednesday for Ness’s 5,001st training win.
THIRD STAR: SASSAFRASSNESS. This Ness homebred filly (notice a theme?) captured a first-level allowance sprint on Wednesday by three lengths.
MONMOUTH PARK
FIRST STAR: PACO LOPEZ. This year’s Preakness-winning jockey didn’t rest on his laurels this weekend; he won three races on a splashtastic Saturday program.
SECOND STAR: TACTICALITY. Splashed away to an impressive 2 1/4-length win in a first-level allowance route on Sunday.
THIRD STAR: UNSOLVED MYSTERY. Won a starter allowance sprint by a head on Sunday for her fifth consecutive victory.
PARX RACING
FIRST STAR: NINETYPRCENTMADDIE. One of Parx’s all-stars earned yet another big win on Tuesday.
SECOND STAR: YEDSIT HAZLEWOOD. He’s found his best stride at Parx as of late and will have every chance to catch Mychel Sanchez in the standings.
THIRD STAR: WHO’S THE KING. Showed speed and drew off to win a first-level allowance route on Monday, improving to 3-for-3 at Parx on the year in the process.
