We catch up on the latest jockey and trainer statistics from Colonial Downs. Who’s hot (and not)?
We’re halfway through the meet, so we’re beginning to see some recognizable trends. How does it look with several weeks left to go?
The numbers:
COLONIAL DOWNS JOCKEYS
Jockey Ben Curtis continued his hot streak, going 6-for-19 last week, and he’s 11-for-37 in the last two weeks, which has propelled him to a comfortable, seven-win advantage in the win column… Paco Lopez went 4-for-5 last week and is second with 17 wins overall, including 8-for-20 in the last two weeks… Among other flat riders, Jevian Toledo won three times, while John Velazquez, Mychel Sanchez, Jaime Rodriguez, Javier Castellano, and Gavin Ashton won two apiece… Jump jockey Graham Watters went 3-for-3 during the week and now is 7-for-8 at the meet… Curtis leads the colony with 6.11 added wins, comparing the number of wins a jockey has recorded to the number which the odds of his or her mounts would have predicted… Others in the top 15 in starts (38 or more) and added wins include Sheldon Russell (3.50), Paco Lopez (3.46), Antonio Gallardo (0.31), and Jevian Toledo (0.26)… The range of all riders is 6.11 to (-2.81)… Among riders not named Graham Watters, who is pulling in over 54% of available purse money, the leader in percentage of purse earned is JG Torrealba, at 20.35%, with Curtis just behind (20.16%) and leading regular Colonial jocks in this category as well…

Mike Trombetta and Brittany Russell each won three last week and remain first and second in wins, with Trombetta three clear of Russell midway through the meet… Both are winning at a 23%+ clip… Neil Morris and Mary Lightner each won twice… 25 trainers won at least one race… Trombetta and Russell are also one two in added wins, comparing a trainer’s actual wins to what the odds of his or her runners would have predicted… Trombetta has won 6.67 more races than his odds would have predicted, while Russell is at 3.34… The range of all trainers is 6.67 to (-3.14)… Jack Fisher and Shug McGaughey are one-two in percentage of purse earned, both around 30% in limited local action… Fisher is 5-for-10 at the meet… Keith Desormeaux (27.57%) is tops among trainers also in the top 15 by starts (19 starts needed)…
