CT: Diakonissa headlines Its Binn Too Long
A compact but intriguing field of seven West Virginia-bred sophomore fillies will square off in Saturday night’s $75,000 Its Binn Too Long Stakes at Charles Town Races. The 4½-furlong dash marks a key early-season test for state-bred fillies, with several looking to stamp themselves as top contenders heading into the heart of the season.
Diakonissa (Post 1, 6-5) headlines the field as the most accomplished runner by a clear margin. Trained by Anthony Farrior and owned by Ultra Championship Racing LLC, this daughter of Preservationist makes her three-year-old debut after a stellar juvenile campaign that included two stakes wins, one of which came in the West Virginia Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders Classic. Regular rider Arnaldo Bocachica will be aboard, and if she can build off her runner-up finish in the Casey Memorial Stakes to close out last year, she can be ready to roll. She’s already defeated several rivals in this field and looms large as the one to beat.
First Print (Post 7, 9-2) appears to be an up-and-comer for owner-trainer Javier Contreras. Sired by Last Print, a son of Fiber Sonde, she returned from a promising debut to impressively break her maiden at second asking. Jockey Juan Nunez will try to make it two straight. While she faces winners for the first time, she brings sharp form and a touch of upside.
Over the Bull (Post 3, 5-1), a homebred for trainer-owner Michael E. Sterling, showed promise last year, finishing third — beaten just a neck — by Diakonissa in the WV Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders Classic. Though she was a middling fourth last time in allowance company, Denis Araujo retains the mount and she’s shown enough to be a contender if she can recapture that prior spark.

Allformenoneforyou (Post 5, 4-1) brings early speed and a forward-running style that could prove dangerous at this short trip. The Fiber Sonde filly has steadily improved with each of her three starts for trainer Cynthia McKee and will be ridden by Marshall Mendez. Her recent maiden score was visually impressive, and she may be the one they’ll all have to catch.
Flying to Neptune (Post 6, 8-1) also hails from the Farrior barn and showed early promise with a strong debut win at Timonium. However, her two tries against winners have been disappointing, including a seventh-place finish in the WV Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders Classic. Angel Cruz gets the return call for owner ARD Racing Stables.
Look Ahead (Post 2, 15-1) is the most experienced filly in the field with ten starts to date. She struggled badly last out against older fillies in the Original Gold Stakes, finishing eighth in her second outing for trainer Tim Shanley and owner Kendrick Bullard, who claimed the Mucho Macho Man filly three back. While she has a win outside of maiden company, it came against claimers, and she’ll need to elevate her game with jockey Maximo Chilo aboard.
Macnick Time (Post 4, 15-1) gave trainer Russell Davis III his first career win when she broke her maiden last December. Now returning for her sophomore season, this gray daughter of Gattopardo will be ridden by Christian Hiraldo for Bearowitz LLC. She’s yet to face winners, but her consistent in-the-money form and a third-place finish in the Casey while still a maiden last November make her an interesting longshot.
Diakonissa is the clear class of the field and will be tough to beat if she fires off the bench. If not, this will be a wide-open affair. The Its Binn Too Long is carded as the seventh race on an eight-race program. Post time for the card is 7:00 p.m.
