Sophomores to square off in Parx stakes

March 4 marks the first stakes action of the year at Parx Racing, as the track plays host to a pair of events for three-year-olds. The $75,000 Main Line Stakes for fillies and the $75,000 City of Brotherly Love Stakes for 3-year-olds will both be contested over a distance of 1 1/16 miles.

In the City of Brotherly Love Stakes, Global Steve, owned by Cash Is King LLC and LC Racing LLC and trained by Butch Reid, will aim to rebound from a sixth-place finish in the Withers Stakes. The son of Bucchero previously captured the Parx Future Stars and has won two of his three career starts. As the only Triple Crown nominee in the field, he sits at 4-1 on the morning line.

Trainer Rick Dutrow enters as a key figure in both races, saddling the morning line favorite in each. In the City of Brotherly Love Stakes, Dutrow may send out even-money favorite McAfee, a debut winner who most recently finished fifth in the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes on March 1. Given the quick turnaround, McAfee is expected to scratch, but if he runs, top jockey Joel Rosario is named to ride.

The Main Line Stakes will feature Dutrow’s FMQ Stables-owned Diriyah as the 8-5 morning line favorite. Diriyah has not raced since breaking her maiden at second asking on November 6 at Indiana Grand. Rosario is also set to ride her.

The Main Line field also boasts two stakes-winning fillies. Hollywood Beauty, who dominated the Parx Future Stars Fillies Stakes to close out 2024 with an eight-length victory, returns after finishing third in the Ruthless Stakes at Aqueduct. Trained by Marya Montoya for owner Albert Lupcho, she will have Mychel Sanchez aboard.

Also in contention is Beautiful Blome, winner of Delaware Park’s White Clay Creek Stakes, though she has since finished fifth and sixth in two subsequent outings. Bred in Maryland by owners Charles Blandford and Theresa Haupt, she is trained by Anthony Pecoraro.

Monday’s action-packed card features 10 races, with the Main Line Stakes scheduled as Race 8 and the City of Brotherly Love Stakes as Race 9. First post is set for 12:05 p.m. ET.
