Lonesome Boy all alone in City of Brotherly Love win
Guanare went off at 4-5 in Tuesday’s $75,000 City of Brotherly Love Stakes for three-year-olds at Parx Racing. But he had no answers for 10-1 outsider Lonesome Boy.
The locally-based Lonesome Boy, the third-place finisher in a Feb. 19 allowance and facing the two runners who bested him that day among others, took over nearing the quarter pole and drew away to a dominant 6 ¾-length victory.
It was the third win in four starts for Lonesome Boy, who is trained by Hugo Padilla for John Parker. Lonesome Boy now has three wins from 10 starts for earnings of $126,444.
Under jockey Adam Bowman, Lonesome Boy pressed the pace set by Le Vin on a sloppy sealed main track. Le Vin, runner-up in the Feb. 19 allowance, led by just a head over Lonesome Boy after a half-mile in 47.05 seconds but would shortly cede control.
Lonesome Boy was up by a length after three quarters in 1:12.87 and went on to the easy win in 1:44.60 for a mile and 70 yards. Guanare, winner of Laurel Park’s Spectacular Bid last out, finished second, while Le Vin held third. Just Step On It, winner of the Feb. 19 allowance, finished fourth, just ahead of Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes winner Capo.
Lonesome Boy returned backers $23.40.
One race prior, trainer Butch Reid filled out the exacta as his trainees Jeanne Marie and Kiss for Luck ran one-two.
Jeanne Marie, owned by Cash Is King and LC Racing, ran second to three-time stakes winner Carmelina on debut but has won two straight since. Although this was her first start since July, bettors betrayed no hesitation in backing her, betting her down to 1.30-1 and making her the slight favorite over the Chad Brown-trained Experimental, who finished third.
Under Mychel Sanchez, Jeanne Marie controlled the pace throughout and won by 2 ½ lengths in 1:45.88 for a mile and 70 yards. Jeanne Marie paid $4.60 to win.
Parx handled over $3 million on the 10-race program.
