Direct the Cat romps in Casey Memorial

No one knows what the future holds for Direct the Cat. But the present is plenty good enough.

The two-year-old Fiber Sonde filly ran her win streak to four with yet another dominant victory October 4 in the James and Eleanor Casey Memorial Stakes at Charles Town Races, and it was, as all of her wins have been, as easy as could be.

Direct the Cat went straight to the front, shrugged off 54-1 early pace rival Mad Swann, turned back a mid-race challenge from Runaway Beauty, and cruised home with a 7 ½-length win in 1:26.01 for seven furlongs on a fast main track.

Direct the Cat went off at 1-10 odds, with every other horse at least 10-1. She paid $2.20 to win – the minimum at Charles Town – as well as $2.20 to place and show. Bridge jumpers rejoiced, as more than $419,000 was wagered in the win-place-show pools on the contest.

For comparison purposes, Direct the Cat’s running time was virtually identical to the 1:25.98 registered by older male, state-bred allowance runners one race prior, that race going to stakes winner Social Chic.

Cyndy McKee owns and trains Direct the Cat, who was bred by her late husband John McKee. Regular pilot Reshawn Latchman was in the irons.

Runaway Beauty held second, easily clear of show horse Ran Out of Trainer. The one-dollar exacta returned $3.50, while the triple paid $6.20 for a buck.

Direct the Cat has won four of six lifetime starts with earnings just shy of $150,000.
