RACE NUMBER | CONTENDERS | COMMENTS |
Race 5 | 6-1-5-4 | Top choice #6 A Case of You (7-2) had a useful debut when fourth against similar state-bred maidens. That was sprinting and on the slop, so the added ground in this two-turn event is a question mark, but the breeding — sire Ironicus was a two-turn horse, and half-sib Fly Like an Eagle’s only win (from just two career starts) came at nine furlongs — suggests it should be within her scope. If so, any improvement at all should make her a winner today… There’ll be an interesting class comparison here, in that #1 Uptown Girl (9-2) has run two perfectly credible races in her two starts, both against maiden $25k claimers. The speed figs say she fits nicely in here… #5 Bai Bai Samurai (2-1) makes her debut here for top trainer John Servis and is a half to the multiple stakes-placed Kidnapped… #4 Phancy Philly (3-1) was second, albeit five back, against similar last out in her second career start… |
Race 7 | 4-8-2-5 | The question of what you make of the presence of #4 Jeopardy James (4-1) in this spot will go a ways towards how you ‘cap it. On the one hand, he was a $585,000 purchase for Lael Stable as a two-year-old in training, who hasn’t run badly in his career, and so this drop into the claiming ranks might seem a bit precipitous. On the other, he’s failed at the second allowance level in four consecutive tries and is a four-year-old who’s about to be five, so you could make the case that it’s exactly the spot he needs to be in as a racehorse. We lean towards the latter view, note that he ran the best race of his career going seven furlongs, and have him on top here… #8 American Unity (7-2) won last in his first try in the Ness barn and seems to fit here… Nothing wrong with that last try for #2 Charlies Safari (6-1), who was a bit stymied by traffic but rallied for the show spot. A cleaner trip would aid the cause for this late-running sort… #5 Judicial Mandate (6-1) ran second against similar in last… |
