“From the Spa” returns to keep you up-to-date on horses bred in the mid-Atlantic racing in Saratoga stakes

The second running of the $100,000 Mahony Stakes, a five and one half furlong turf sprint for three year olds, will take place as the seventh race on Saratoga’s Wednesday card. This year’s field features some talented entries including four from the Grade III Quick Call earlier this meet, as well as a few new shooters who will likely look to add to hot early fractions. While most of these entries specialize in sprints, Buy Land and See will cut back from seven and a half furlongs, possibly leading to a change in his running style from on the pace to a closing type. A change in running style may prove advantageous here, and could give Buy Land and See an edge up on his competition in his second career start at the Spa.

Breaking from the inside post, Buy Land and See is a grey three year old colt who was bred in Pennsylvania by his owner, Joseph Imbesi. He returns to Saratoga after losing his first start in a maiden try a year ago, which remains his only career loss after rattling off three straight wins including a stakes victory at Belmont in October. While his most recent victory last month at Parx was a wire to wire effort after coming off a long layoff, Buy Land and See has shown the versatility to close, and having a top jockey in Jose Ortiz will certainly help in positioning him well for a strong effort here. By Cairo Prince – Twiggles, by Maria’s Mon, this Steve Klesaris trainee will need to have a career best effort to beat this group, but even at morning line odds of 8/1, Buy Land and See won’t be overlooked and has the talent to find the winner’s circle.
