FIRST STAR: BISHOPS BAY. Monmouth Park hosted the historic Philip Iselin Stakes on Saturday, featuring older males going 1 1/16 miles on dirt. Bishops Bay, who was second in his last two stakes tries, broke through for his first victory of the season, capturing the grade 3 contest by a neck. He raced in second early on and appeared to get a good setup, as Chunk of Gold went the first quarter-mile in 23.43 and the first half-mile in 46.92. However, Chunk of Gold refused to go down without a fight, and engaged Bishops Bay in battle down the lane. Ultimately, Bishops Bay got the better of his rival, with Chunk of Gold second-best, six lengths clear of third-place finisher La Frost. Although it was his first stakes win this year, Bishops Bay won five stakes races last year, including the Cigar Mile, and is now 10-for-17 lifetime with earnings of $2,632,800. He’s owned by KAS Stables, trained by Brad Cox, and ridden by Luis Rivera Jr.

SECOND STAR: THUNDERING. Colonial Downs held a pair of Maryland/Virginia-restricted stakes races on Saturday. The first, the Find Stakes, spotlighted older males going 1 1/16 miles on the inner grass course. When morning line favorite Gigante scratched, the race was Thundering’s to lose, and he did not disappoint. Sent off as the overwhelming 1-10 favorite, he lived up to expectations with a strong four-wide kick at the top of the stretch, pulling away from there to win by 3 3/4 lengths in 1:41.69. Bred in Maryland by Jal Dastur and by Country Life Farm’s Mosler, he’s now a two-time stakes winner on the year and a four-time winner in 18 starts, with earnings of $361,418. He looms as the overwhelming current favorite for this year’s Maryland Million Turf. Paco Lopez was up for owner Dastur Racing and trainer Derek Ryan.

THIRD STAR: PINK RUBY. One race later, Pink Ruby, bred in Virginia by Knockgriffin Farm, prevailed in the All Brandy Stakes, for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on the outer grass course. She raced right off of longshot early leader Lucia Sciarra, took advantage when that rival tired, and held off favored Nick’s Notion, who tried to rally off of slow fractions, to prevail by a neck at 6-1. She ran the distance in 1:42.43 to run her record to 5-for-13 lifetime, with this being her first start on grass. Larry Nafe is the winning owner, Lindsay Schultz the winning trainer, and Sonny Leon the winning pilot.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: AMIDSHIPS. In his first start in over a year, he beat a West Virginia-bred first-level allowance field by six lengths on Thursday.

SECOND STAR: JEANNETTE THE JET. Rallied from off the pace and got up in the last strides to win a first-level allowance route on Saturday.

THIRD STAR: BELLOFTHEBLUEGRASS. Raced on the pace and drew off late in a first-level allowance sprint earlier on the Saturday program.

DELAWARE PARK

FIRST STAR: INTREPID MO. Overcame a wide trip to win a second-level allowance route on Thursday for her first victory of the season.

SECOND STAR: MARTIN CHUAN. Rode three winners on the Friday card; he’s currently third in the jockey standings with 27 victories.

THIRD STAR: OAK BROOK LADY. Overcame a bad start to take a first-level allowance sprint on Friday as the even-money favorite, improving to 2-for-2 lifetime in the process.

COLONIAL DOWNS

FIRST STAR: THUNDERING. Continued a sneaky-good season with his Find victory.

SECOND STAR: PINK RUBY. Dug in and held off Nick’s Notion to capture the All Brandy and make her grass debut a winning one.

THIRD STAR: WHENIGETTOHEAVEN. Came up the inside and captured the Meadow Stable Handicap on Saturday for his eighth career win.

MONMOUTH PARK

FIRST STAR: BISHOPS BAY. Displayed his heart and class in an exciting Iselin win.

SECOND STAR: RE MARKABLY. Rated off the pace and wore down the leaders in the stretch to prevail in a second-level allowance sprint on Sunday.

THIRD STAR: LUIS RIVERA JR. Rode three winners on both Saturday and Sunday, including the Iselin, his first graded stakes win.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: STRIKING SPARKS. Despite drifting in in the stretch, he held on to win a first-level allowance route on Saturday for his fourth score of the year in 13 starts.

SECOND STAR: MAD FOR MADDY. Won a first-level allowance route of her own by 5 1/4 lengths earlier on Saturday.

THIRD STAR: MYCHEL SANCHEZ. Fresh off his 2,000th career win last Thursday at Colonial Downs, he rode three winners on Parx’s Saturday card.
