Preakness Profile: Bull by the Horns
Rushaway winner will be a longshot

Bull by the Horns may be one of the most overlooked closers in the field. After failing to threaten in the Fountain of Youth, he rebounded impressively to win the Rushaway Stakes over Turfway’s synthetic surface, rallying from far back to prevail in a stretch duel. The Saffie Joseph trainee has shown flashes, though consistency remains elusive.
The gray colt owns a classy pedigree. He is by champion Essential Quality and out of a mare by Blame. Those bloodlines strongly imply stamina and late development, and his running style fits the pedigree. Purchased for only $75,000, he appears to be improving with distance.
Bull by the Horns should settle toward the rear early and attempt to make one sustained run. He will need pace help, and he’ll need to take a big step forward to get even a minor piece.
