Finished third in the Blue Grass

5. Talkin (20-1)

  • Color / Sex: Bay Colt
  • Bred / By: Kentucky / Fifth Avenue Bloodstock
  • Sire – Dam (Damsire): Good Magic – Rote, by Tiznow
  • Starts-Wins-Places-Shows / Earnings: 5-1-1-1 / $288,625
  • Jockey / Trainer: Irad Ortiz Jr. / Danny Gargan
  • Owner: Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Pine Racing Stables, Legendary Thoroughbreds, Belmar Racing and Breeding, LLC and R. A. Hill Stable

Talkin has quietly put together a respectable résumé against top competition. After finishing second to Napoleon Solo in last fall’s Champagne Stakes, the Danny Gargan trainee returned this spring with solid efforts in both the Tampa Bay Derby and Blue Grass Stakes. In the Blue Grass he rallied from midpack to finish third behind Further Ado and Ottinho, showing determination despite being outkicked late.

The colt owns one of the strongest pedigrees in the field. He is by Good Magic, sire of multiple top-class dirt runners, and out of a mare by Tiznow. That cross strongly suggests stamina and resilience, and his $600,000 yearling price reflected his physical appeal and bloodlines.

Talkin projects as a versatile runner capable of adapting to the race shape. He can sit just behind the pace or settle farther back if necessary. To win, however, he probably needs another step forward speed-figure wise. His consistency gives him a realistic chance to hit the board.
