Preakness Profile: Robusta
Runner finished 14th in the Kentucky Derby
Robusta’s path to the Preakness has been uneven but not without promise. The Doug O’Neill trainee finished second in the San Felipe Stakes before fading badly in both the Santa Anita Derby and Kentucky Derby. Still, his runner-up effort behind Potente in the San Felipe demonstrated that he possesses enough raw ability to compete with quality horses when conditions suit him.
The Calumet Farm colt is by Accelerate out of an Into Mischief mare, a pedigree that offers a blend of stamina and tactical speed. Accelerate excelled at classic distances later in his career, and there is reason to believe Robusta may improve as he matures physically. His bloodlines suggest he should handle distance better than some of the more speed-oriented runners in this field.
Robusta likely will likely attempt to secure forward position early and hope to stay on late. His Derby effort was discouraging, but horses sometimes rebound sharply in the Preakness with the shorter turnaround. He needs a major forward move, though his connections are experienced on racing’s biggest stages.
