Mid-Atlantic three stars: April 13, 2026
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: MAGGIE’S GIRL. After two runner-up efforts to begin her season, Maggie’s Girl broke through at Charles Town on Saturday, winning the 4 1/2-furlong Fancy Buckles Stakes by a head. Sent away as the 3/2 favorite in the eight-horse field, she broke well and battled for the early lead with Priority One and Golden Circles, both of whom raced to her inside. She dispatched their challenges on the turn and moved in front by a half-length, before confronting a fresh threat in Party Time for Me. She dug in under Larry Reynolds’s urging and held on, with Party Time for Me second and Golden Circles 2 1/4 lengths back in third. She ran the distance on a fast track in 52.58 seconds. This win improved her career record to 15-for-29, including four stakes wins. She was bred in West Virginia by Tim and Judy Grams, who also own her. Tim is the winning trainer.
SECOND STAR: UNION FLEET. The feature race on a beautiful spring afternoon at Laurel Park was a third-level allowance race for older males at one mile. Union Fleet went off at 49-1, by far the biggest price in the seven-horse field, but he got the last laugh in a half-length win. He made a strong four-wide move on the turn and moved to engage Indy Charges On in the stretch. He pulled away from that rival in the late stages, then held off the resurgent challenge of J D Factor for the win, the second of the season and his eighth in his 45-race career. He ran the distance on a fast track in 1:38.88 with Jose Vargas up for owners Pepe Stable and J L M Jacona Stable and trainer Jose Magana.
THIRD STAR: ITALIAN SOIREE. One of the co-features at Laurel on Sunday was a second-level allowance sprint for fillies and mares at 5 1/2 furlongs on the grass. Grade 3 winner Italian Soiree, who earned that graded stakes victory in last July’s Coronation Cup Stakes at Saratoga, won her first start off a six-month layoff by 1 3/4 lengths. She drafted in midpack in the early stages, then moved off the rail on the turn and gained ground from the embattled early leaders. She took control and held off the late rally of Epic Style to win, going the distance on a firm track in 1:01.97. She’s owned by Hit the Bid Racing Stable and trained by Graham Motion.
LAUREL PARK
FIRST STAR: UNION FLEET. Handled the jump from starter optional claiming company just fine with his upset victory.
SECOND STAR: ITALIAN SOIREE. Got the win on Sunday in a perfect prep for a potential return to stakes company in the near-future.
THIRD STAR: SACRED THUNDER. Rallied up the rail to win a second-level sprint on Saturday in an exciting finish.
CHARLES TOWN
FIRST STAR: MAGGIE’S GIRL. She showed her heart and class in a determined Fancy Buckles victory.
SECOND STAR: HEY BOOTS. Picked up his third win of the year in six starts in a gate-to-wire first-level dash win on Friday.
THIRD STAR: THE BIG LEP. Drew away under a drive in a West Virginia-bred first-level dash for his first win against older horses; this up-and-coming West Virginia-bred 3-year-old is now 3-for-6 lifetime.
PARX RACING
FIRST STAR: YEDSIT HAZLEWOOD. Rode four winners on the Monday card, three of them trained by Jamie Ness.
SECOND STAR: DURATION. Sat off the pace and kicked on three-wide to win a second-level sprint on Wednesday for his third consecutive victory.
THIRD STAR: CONFIRMED STAR. Rallied from well out of it to capture a second-level sprint of her own earlier on the Wednesday program.
