Mid-Atlantic three stars: January 12, 2026
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: HAMMER. Charles Town hosted its Saturday feature, an open allowance sprint at seven furlongs, under foggy, sloppy conditions. The adverse weather didn’t slow down Hammer, who won his 2026 debut by 2 3/4 lengths. Sent away as the 7-5 favorite in the seven-horse field, he entangled himself in an early battle with longshot Holy Synchronicity. The two raced through an opening quarter mile of :23.57 and a first half of :47.52 while several lengths clear of the others. As they rounded the second and final turn, Hammer dispatched of Holy Synchronicity, but soon had to deal with a pair of fresh challengers in Radar Alert and Falcon Blue. Both of their rallies fell short, and Hammer had plenty left to give, and hit the wire in front in 1:25.50. He began his campaign on a winning note following a 4-for-12 season last year, and improved his overall mark to 7-4-5 in 23 lifetime starts with earnings of $184,561. He’s owned by David Porto, trained by Kristy Gazzier, and ridden by Arnaldo Bocachica.
SECOND STAR: IN MY MEMORIES. Similarly sloppy, but clearer, conditions ruled the day at Laurel Park on Saturday, as seven older fillies and mares traveled six furlongs in a second-level sprint. In My Memories, most recently second behind Overnight Pow Wow at Charles Town, won by two lengths in a 12-1 upset. She broke well from post position five under J.G. Torrealba and rated off early leader Talk to the Judge. She was in the perfect stalking spot: a half-length off the pacesetter, while 1 1/2 lengths further clear of favored Green Eyed Monster in third. When Talk to the Judge began to give way, In My Memories took full advantage, striking the front at the top of the stretch and pulling clear for the victory. She covered the distance in 1:12.94 for her sixth career win in 22 starts. James Wolf is the winning owner; Anthony Farrior the winning trainer.
THIRD STAR: BOLD DIVERSION. The opening day feature at Laurel on Friday was a second-level sprint for older males at six furlongs. Intrepid’s Legacy, looking for his third consecutive victory, went off as the 7-10 favorite in the six-horse field, but could do no better than fourth. Bold Diversion, third in the Howard and Sondra Bender Memorial Stakes last out, took full advantage of the class relief and won by a half-length. He chased the pace on the rail in the early stages, angled to the two-path in the stretch, and wore down longshot leader Tenebris to win in 1:12.58 over a fast track. The gray 4-year-old gelding is now 6-3-4 in 20 career starts and has earned $232,455. He’s owned and trained by Joanne Shankle and was ridden by Tais Lyapustina.
LAUREL PARK
FIRST STAR: IN MY MEMORIES. Savored the slop and sat the trip to pull off an upset win.
SECOND STAR: BOLD DIVERSION. He’s found a home in allowance sprints and picked up another win against those types on Friday.
THIRD STAR: LET’S GO LANDO. Easily won a first-level route for 3-year-olds on Saturday, giving Gary Capuano yet another intriuging 3-year-old in his barn.
CHARLES TOWN
FIRST STAR: HAMMER. Worked his way through the fog to pick up the win in Saturday’s feature.
SECOND STAR: MUAD’DIB. This Charles Town veteran made his 9-year-old debut a winning one on Friday, overhauling early leader Youthinkthatsfunny to win an allowance sprint by 1 1/2 lengths for his 18th career victory.
THIRD STAR: PARTY TIME FOR ME. Pressed odds-on leader Howler and wore her down to win a first-level dash on Friday.
PARX RACING
FIRST STAR: QUASI WARRIOR. Stalked and pounced to win a first-level sprint on Tuesday for his third win in a row.
SECOND STAR: WAX BOX. Took control in the stretch and held off the late surge of second choice Beyondexpectations to score in a Pennsylvania-bred sprint on Wednesday.
THIRD STAR: MYCHEL SANCHEZ. Rode three winners on the Wednesday card, and just missed a fourth aboard Beyondexpectations.
