Intriguing allowance highlights Friday Laurel card
Fear Nothing and And Sum headline Friday’s featured eighth race at Laurel Park, a five-and-a-half–furlong allowance for Maryland-bred or -sired runners that brings together proven local form and an intriguing recent maiden winner.
Fear Nothing is listed as the 3-1 morning-line choice for owner and trainer Hamilton A. Smith. The 3-year-old bay gelding will be ridden by Jose Vargas and enters off a sharp victory going six furlongs at Laurel on Nov. 13, when he pressed the pace before edging clear late. Fear Nothing owns four career victories from 19 starts and has won his last three main-track outings.

And Sum, the 9-2 third choice, makes just his second career start but arrives with considerable upside for trainer Kieron Magee. Owned by Tanterra Stables, the son of Great Notion was an impressive debut winner at Laurel on Nov. 22, taking a $54,000 maiden special weight by nearly seven lengths over a sloppy track in a race that’s produced two next-out winners to date. Carlos Lopez retains the mount after setting the pace and drawing off late, and And Sum’s early speed could put him in a controlling position as he steps up into allowance company.
Among the others, Great Heavens looms as a consistent and seasoned threat at 4-1 on the morning line for trainer Jose J. Magana and owners Pepe Stable and JLM Jacona Stable. The 5-year-old gelding, ridden by Forest Boyce, has hit the board in 17 of 27 career starts despite winning just three of them.
Neverworkedaday, listed at 6-1, also warrants respect for trainer Gary Capuano and owner Daniel E. Lunceford. Red-hot apprentice Yedsit Hazlewood was named on both this runner and Fear Nothing and lands here for his main trainer. A lightly raced 3-year-old, Neverworkedaday exited a runner-up finish behind And Sum in that Nov. 22 maiden special weight to graduate next out and could be competitive with another forward step.
One race prior, a six-furlong maiden special weight contest for three-year-olds and up marks the local bow of Lannister. The sophomore Not This Time gelding, the first foal out of the stakes-placed turfer Wexx, was a $400,000 yearling purchase for the SF Bloodstock/Starlight Racing/Madaket Stables ownership trio.
Initially trained in Southern California by Bob Baffert, Lannister was a well-beaten sixth as the 4-5 favorite in his career bow at Del Mar in July. He’s since been gelded and transferred into Brittany Russell’s Laurel barn.
Sheldon Russell will ride Lannister, the 2-1 morning line favorite.
Saturday’s card features a pair of juvenile stakes, the Gin Talking for fillies going seven furlongs and the Heft for two-year-olds at the same distance.
