Dazzling Move one of several Delaware Handicap stories

The spotlight will be on Miller Racing’s Dazzling Move in Sunday’s $400,000, Grade III Delaware Handicap, the 88th running of the track’s signature race for fillies and mares.

The 3-2 morning line favorite, trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., will face six rivals in the mile-and-an-eighth test, which goes as race eight with a 4:46 p.m. post time.

Dazzling Move comes in with plenty of back class. The Ontario-bred 4-year-old finished second in both the Grade I Ogden Phipps and Grade II Shuvee earlier this summer at Saratoga before running fifth in the Grade I Personal Ensign. With four wins and more than $450,000 in earnings, she will try to give Joseph back-to-back victories in the Del ’Cap after his triumph last year with Honor D Lady.

The 3-year-old Margie’s Intention adds plenty of intrigue, if she posts. Trained by Brad Cox, she won the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan in May at Pimlico and was second in the Delaware Oaks in June before running third in the Alabama at Saratoga behind Nitrogen and Grade 1 winner Good Cheer and ahead of another Grade 1 winner in La Cara. A victory on Sunday would make her the first 3-year-old to capture the Delaware Handicap since Our Mims in 1977.

Among Dazzling Move’s other challengers is Regaled, who has knocked on the door in several graded stakes. Trained by D. Whitworth Beckman, she was third in the Grade II Locust Grove at Churchill Downs Sept. 13.

“We are wheeling her back on pretty short rest after the Locust Grove, but she is training well and this is a good opportunity,” Beckman said. “She is a consistent filly who runs her race every time. She ran well [third] in the Delaware Oaks last year, so we are expecting her to be competitive this Sunday.”

Another mare enjoying a strong campaign is Majestic Oops, who has strung together wins at Oaklawn and Monmouth and exits a third-place finish in the Grade I Ballerina at Saratoga.

Trainer Dan Ward believes the five-year-old Majestic Harbor mare has finally figured things out. She earned her first stakes win earlier this year and since has another stakes win and two graded placings.

“Once she became comfortable with sitting off the pace and being relaxed, it made a big difference,” Ward said. “When she stepped into stakes competition, those were legit races because she gave some really nice fillies and mares weight and still ran well, so she showed she is not a fluke.”

Majestic Oops, Margie’s Intention, and 2024 Black-Eyed Susan winner Gun Song are also cross-entered in Friday’s Grade II Beldame at Belmont at the Big A, but if they line up at Delaware, they’ll have to topple Dazzling Move to get the biggest share of the $400,000 purse.
