Mid-Atlantic three stars: August 11, 2025

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

Fort Washington prevailed by a half-length in the Grade 1 Arlington Million. Photo by Allison Janezic.

FIRST STAR: FORT WASHINGTON. Beautiful weather greeted a field of seven at Colonial Downs on Saturday for the 1 ¼-mile, Grade 1 Arlington Million. Fort Washington, who won the Dinner Party Stakes on the Preakness undercard earlier this year, won the Million by a half-length with a last-to-first move. He was patiently handled early on by Junior Alvarado, who kept him at the back of the pack for most of the running. At the top of the stretch, Alvarado angled him into the five-path and made his move after the leaders. Grand Sonata fought hard along the inside after inheriting the lead earlier in the stretch, but Fort Washington wore him down for the 5-1 victory. He ran the distance in 1.59.58, improving to 3-for-5 on the year and 7-for-28 lifetime. He’s owned by Magic Cap Stables and trained by Shug McGaughey.

SECOND STAR: CHARLENE’S DREAM. Earlier on the Saturday program at Colonial, another Preakness undercard winner delivered. Charlene’s Dream, winner of the Galorette in May, captured the Beverly D. Stakes by 1 ½ lengths. Unlike Fort Washington’s come-from-behind win, Charlene’s Dream earned her honors in gate-to-wire style. She set the opening quarter in 23.78, slowed it down for a first half in 48.30, and was unable to be caught. She ran 1 3/16 miles on the lawn in 1.53.74 and improved to 6-for-11 lifetime and 2-for-4 this season. Javier Castellano was up for owner Domeyko Taylor LP and trainer Ed Moger.

THIRD STAR: GIOCOSO. The first graded stakes of the day at Colonial on Saturday was the one-mile Secretariat Stakes, which attracted a field of eight 3-year-old males traveling one mile on the grass. Giocoso missed the board in his first three stakes tries of the year, but finally broke through to win this one by a length. He enjoyed a great trip on the rail, drafting in third off the pace while covered up. At the top of the stretch, he was caught behind a wall of four horses, but jockey Ben Curtis remained patient. He moved his mount through a hole on the rail and held off the late challenge of Simulate to win by a length. The 3-year-old Keith Desormeaux trainee improved his record to 3-for-10 lifetime for owner Rocker O Ranch LLC.

COLONIAL DOWNS

FIRST STAR: FORT WASHINGTON. Made a well-timed move and delivered in the Arlington Million.

SECOND STAR: CHARLENE’S DREAM. Texas-bred filly flaunted her speed, which in a small field, can be especially dangerous.

THIRD STAR: GIOCOSO. Patience paid off as he won the Secretariat after saving as much ground as he could.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: NEOLITHICA. Crushed a first-level field by 9 ¼ lengths on Friday for her fourth win of the year.

SECOND STAR: CLASSIC JOKE. Repelled challenges and pulled away late to win a non-winners of three allowance sprint on Thursday.

THIRD STAR: PLEASENTHANKU. Improved to 3-for-3 lifetime with a determined victory in a West Virginia-bred non-winners of three dash on Friday.

DELAWARE PARK

FIRST STAR: CHIPOTLE. Led for every step in a second-level sprint on Saturday; this 3-year-old gelding is now 5-for-6 on the season, with his only defeat coming in the Chick Lang Stakes.

SECOND STAR: SAM STORMY. Got up to win a Delaware-certified allowance race at 21-1 on Thursday, defeating Crabs N Beer and favored Magical Mondays in the process.

THIRD STAR: I’M A CUTIE PIE. Stalked the pace and fended off stretch challenges to win a second-level sprint for fillies and mares earlier on Saturday.

MONMOUTH PARK

FIRST STAR: AIR RECRUIT. Got up in the last jump to win Sunday’s Oceanport Stakes in his second start off a 21 ½-month layoff.

SECOND STAR: SAMUEL MARIN. Rode home five winners on the Saturday program.

THIRD STAR: PACO LOPEZ. Won four races of his own on Sunday, including the Oceanport with Air Recruit.
