Fundraiser launched for injured jock Denis Araujo
Jock injured in Oct. 1 spill
Jockey Denis Araujo underwent surgery to stabilize eight spinal fractures following an Oct. 1 spill at Charles Town, according to a GoFundMe appeal launched to help his family with living expenses during his recovery.
Araujo was riding Tap the Arches in the evening’s second race when his mount clipped another runner’s heels and fell.

According to the fundraiser, surgeons performed a T7–T9 spinal fusion, using six screws and two titanium rods to stabilize the injured area. The post reports that the surgery went well and that Araujo remains neurologically intact.

Araujo, a native of Uruguay, has won 689 races in his career, with purse earnings of more than $17 million. This year, he has recorded 52 wins from 359 starts, including 50 victories at Charles Town, placing him sixth in the track’s jockey standings.
His injuries have left him unable to ride, creating an unexpected loss of income for his family. Funds raised through the appeal will go toward household and living expenses while he recovers.
“The goal is to allow Denis to focus on his recovery while helping his family maintain as much stability and normalcy as possible during this unexpected time,” the post states.
The appeal also thanks the doctors and medical staff who have treated Araujo, along with those who have called, visited, sent messages and offered help since the accident.
“They have a long road ahead, but knowing they are surrounded by so many people who care has made an incredibly difficult time a little easier to face,” the post states.
As of October 7, the fundraiser has pulled in $7,256 of a hoped-for $25,000.
