When For the Ladies got up late to win the $75,000 Shine Again Stakes at Timonium Aug. 29, it wasn’t just her third consecutive triumph. It also provided the first stakes win of trainer Pedro Nazario’s career.

Nazario struck out on his own as a trainer in 2021 and has won 70 races and more than $1.5 million in purse earnings since. He worked his way up from hotwalker to galloping horses to assistant trainer to trainer, though he still gallops some of his own.
