Mid-Atlantic three stars: May 11, 2026

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: HEDGE RATIO. The first stakes race of the Monmouth Park season took place on Sunday, when a field of four 3-year-old males went one mile and 70 yards miles on the dirt in the Long Branch Stakes. Though the race was short on horses, it was long on thrills, as favored Hedge Ratio and 11-1 longshot Star Sweeper dueled down the stretch. Star Sweeper set the pace through respectable early fractions of 23.34 and 47.15, while Hedge Ratio sat off of him in third. At the top of the stretch, Hedge Ratio looked ready to roll by, but Star Sweeper refused to give in. For a little while, it looked like Star Sweeper was going to hold on, but Hedge Ratio ultimately wore him down and won by a head, covering the distance in 1:42.40. He’s now 3-for-6 lifetime, with all of those wins coming within his last four starts, and now has a free entry to the July 18 Haskell Stakes to his credit. Samuel Marin was up for owner Klaravich Stables Inc. and trainer Chad Brown.

SECOND STAR: RYAN’S RUN. Making his first start since an impressive 7 3/4-length maiden win on January 8, Ryan’s Run drew in to Saturday’s Coin Collector Stakes at Charles Town off the also-eligible list, and went off as the 11-10 choice in the six-horse field. He broke well from the outside post and dueled for the early lead with second choice The Big Lep. He put away that rival at the top of the lane and opened up once he changed leads, hitting the wire 5 1/2 lengths in front. The Big Lep held second, with Irish Jubalee third. The undefeated winner ran 4 1/2 furlongs on a fast track in 51.80 seconds for breeder, owner, and trainer Jeff Runco, who bred and owns under the nom de course Coleswood Farm Inc. Arnaldo Bocachica was aboard.

THIRD STAR: PETINGAS TWIN. A stakes-quality open allowance race at Charles Town on Friday was headlined by the return of Barbadian Runner, making his first start since a runner-up finish to Post Time in the Bob Manfuso Stakes in December. He was the 3-5 favorite in the six-horse field, and sat towards the back of the pack early on while Petingas Twin set the pace. He angled off the rail and rallied in the five-path, but Petingas Twin dug in and held on to win by a neck. This was his first win of the year in four starts, and his first since a similarly determined win in the November 22 Dave’s Friend Stakes at Laurel Park. Arnaldo Bocachica was up for owner James Wolf and trainer Anthony Farrior.

LAUREL PARK

FIRST STAR: MAKING DAISYS. This Wesley Ward-trained filly captured a first-level allowance route for 3-year-old fillies on Sunday.

SECOND STAR: JORGE RUIZ. Rode home three winners on Saturday, all of them in grass races.

THIRD STAR: GOODBYE NOTE. Drew off to win an open claiming dirt route on Friday.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: RYAN’S RUN. Looks like yet another Runco-bred rising star.

SECOND STAR: PETINGAS TWIN. Showed his heart to fend off the classy Barbadian Runner, who ran well in his first start off the layoff.

THIRD STAR: CAPTIVATED DRAMA. Fought hard on the lead throughout and held off the closers to win a second-level allowance dash on Saturday.

MONMOUTH PARK

FIRST STAR: HEDGE RATIO. He’s on course for a Haskell bid, and Star Sweeper may be as well.

SECOND STAR: SAMUEL MARIN. Rode home four winners on Saturday’s opening day card.

THIRD STAR: CAIRO SURPRISE. This promising Jersey-bred 3-year-old dusted a field of his fellow Garden Staters on Saturday for his second win of the year in three starts.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: OTTER MISCHIEF. Demolished a second-level allowance field on Tuesday, rating a perfect trip off of early leader Duration and pulling clear in the stretch for an 8 3/4-length triumph.

SECOND STARS: PACO LOPEZ AND FRANCISCO MARTINEZ. Both riders had three-win days last week: Lopez on Tuesday, Martinez on Monday.

THIRD STAR: WARRIOR’S RANSOM. Rallied from last to capture a starter optional claiming route on Tuesday.
