Charles Town picks and analysis: April 18, 2026

RACE 1: 6-3-4-1

#6 Girl Zero arrives off a win in her first start of ’26, has the speed to be involved throughout, and breaks outside others… #3 Collegeville Queen took it on the chin last out against better, but her prior two had been solid; has speed in a race that’s light on it… #4 Tierra Santa backed out in latest going two turns, but she ran well two back in her local one-turn bow and actually galloped out in front of the winner…

RACE 2: 5-1-6-7

Zippy worktab for first-timer #5 Flight Level; low odds mean you’ll want to pay attention to the toteboard to see if the action follows; first foal out of an unraced mare whose dam was a two-time winner… New barn and a sharp work for #1 Hey Nigh Teen, who showed a little talent early before encountering trouble in last couple… #6 Carolina Nights ran better than it looked, breaking slowly and then rushing up to reach the leaders by the entrance to the turn before tiring late; improvement likely…

RACE 3: 7-5-2-1

Trainer Jeff Runco rarely claims horses but made an exception to get #7 Social Chic back in the barn; the veteran has earned a half-million dollars and should be able to get a good stalking spot here… Likely favorite #5 Lord of Cork has run some big races but arrives here off a three-month break and drops into the claiming ranks… #2 Yankee Doodle Kid was DQed from latest because of an eligibility issue but keeps churning out good efforts; trainer Farrior wins at a 23% clip second off the claim…

RACE 4: 3-4-5-6

We’ll munch on some chalk here with #3 Pleasenthanku; the Contreras trainee loves this trip and is making very short work of his conditions with five wins in eight career starts; he’s probably got the most early speed of these, but as he demonstrated last out, doesn’t have to have the lead to thrive… Could be a Contreras exacta, as #4 Dorado figures to try to mow ’em down in later stages and has some very good outings… #5 Moonlit Notion began his career with six straight wins, but after some health issues, he has just one in his last seven starts; disregard the latest as it was a two-turn contest, but with the cutback to one turn here he may have to hustle to show his customary early lick against a rival that has plenty of zip…

RACE 5: 6-1-4-3

#6 Charlienite missed most of a year but made a useful return to action in late March when just missing at this level; won at this level three back but was DQed and looks to be in a congenial spot to graduate… #1 Cowboy Magic makes his career debut for trainer Tim Grams, who can get ’em ready to win first out, and is by a sire, Uncle Lino, who is a productive debut sire; both sibs are pretty useful… #4 Mille Parole ran evenly in latest, and we’re still waiting for the horse who rallied so strongly four back to reemerge…

RACE 6: 5-1-8-2

#5 Head Lad got cooked as part of the early pace when dueling with Sisyphus for a long way before fading to fourth as the favorite, and that rival returns once again; but Sisyphus leaves from the far outside and likely has to be sent to avoid being stuck out in the parking lot around the first turn, and maybe Santaella can find a way to tuck just off that rival early, a tactic that Head Lad has used successfully before… #1 Rick’swarmheart enjoyed an absolutely perfect trip last out when perched behind Head Lad and Sisyphus, and it wouldn’t be a shock if the same scenario developed again in this contest… #8 Sisyphus has no choice but to gun for the advantage from the outside stall; if they leave him be, he might go a long way…

RACE 7: 4-5-7-1

#4 My Max figures to go off short but gets back to best game in this one-turn dash… #5 Foolish Rabbit has some solid works in preparation for his return to action and caught a couple of tough rivals early on… #7 Great Ending’s granddam was a multiple graded stakes winner…

RACE 8: It’s Only Money Stakes

5-8-4-1

Loved #5 Time to Rock heading into the Dash for Cash last year and was rewarded a nice payout when he scored at 9-2, so let’s see if he can repeat; hasn’t raced since, but the zippy worktab implies he’s ready, and that 46 1/5 move April 4 was a second-and-a-half faster than any other work that morning. Since he’s ironed out his gate issues, he’s been terrific… #8 Duncan Idaho lost it at the break in the Dash for Cash, the only blemish on his otherwise spotless ’25 campaign; has plenty of early lick in a race full of it, and the outer draw should aid the cause… The ultra-speedy #4 Honeyquist led much of the Dash for Cash but couldn’t contain the winner late; unlike our top two choices, he has a race under his belt, a front-running allowance score March 6…

RACE 9: 3-5-1-6

#3 T Rex Union should appreciate a bit easier company than he’s been seeing; last wasn’t terrible after breaking outward a few paths, and interior draw should help him maintain a straighter course… #5 Gimme a Holler is another class-dropper after some time away and should be part of the early action… #1 You Rotten Joker easily beat two-life company two back and makes his third start off the bench…
