LAUREL PARK JOCKEYS
Apprentice Jose Vargas continued to have the hot hand, winning with four of nine starters over the opening weekend of the Laurel spring meet to lead local riders… Mychel Sanchez, Yedsit Hazlewood, and Angel Cruz each won twice, and all told 12 riders won at least once… For the year to date, Hazlewood has 53 wins to lead local jocks, followed by Vargas (25) and Cruz (24)… Year to date, Vargas leads all local riders with 8.80 added wins, followed by Cruz (3.98) and Jevian Toledo (2.02)… Added wins compares a rider’s actual wins to the number of wins the odds would have predicted, with a positive total meaning the rider had won more races than the odds of his or her mounts suggest… The range of all riders is 8.80 to (-3.72)… Among regular Laurel riders, Sheldon Russell, Hazlewood, Vargas, and Forest Boyce are the only riders above 20% of purse earned; Russell is at 26.03%, with the others between 20.34% and 23.94%…
