Mid-Atlantic three stars: March 16, 2026
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: INCREDIBOLT. The Derby trail came to the Mid-Atlantic on Saturday, when Colonial Downs played host to the Virginia Derby over 1 1/8 miles. Incredibolt bounced back from a disappointing effort in the Holy Bull Stakes to win by four lengths. He rated off the pace in the two-path, while Lockstocknpharaoah, Work, and Clocker Special contested the lead. He was bottled behind horses at the top of the stretch, then found an opening towards the rail at the eighth pole and struck the front, opening up with every stride in the final stages. He ran the distance on a fast track in 1:47.76, with 36-1 Grittiness getting up for second over Confessional. Incredibolt clinched a spot in the starting gate for the Run for the Roses with that win, and picked up his third win five career starts with earnings of $498,861. He’s owned by Pin Oak Stud, trained by Riley Mott, and ridden by Jaime Torres.
SECOND STAR: BOTTLE OF ROUGE. One race prior on Saturday at Colonial, a field of five 3-year-old fillies squared off in the Virginia Oaks. California shipper Bottle of Rouge converted a perfect trip to win by 4 1/4 lengths. Maryland-bred Dazzling Dame set the early pace by herself, but Bottle of Rouge waited in the wings just off the lead on the inside. Flavien Prat found daylight with Bottle of Rouge at the top of the stretch, and she moved by Dazzling Dame without much trouble and won easily, with Dazzling Dame holding second and Baffle third. The winner ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.41 to improve to 4-for-6 lifetime, including three stakes wins, with career earnings of just under $600,000. She’s owned by Natalie Baffert and trained by Bob Baffert.
THIRD STAR: CHASTEN. The Sandy Bottom Stakes for fillies and mares, also contested at Colonial on Saturday, split into two divisions. Chasten ran by far the faster division, setting a new track record for a mile in 1:33.40. She raced in the center of the track early on, with Brown Sugar and Her Laugh setting the early pace. Her Laugh took control at the top of the stretch, but Chasten worked her way past and won by a half-length. Her Laugh held second, while Barbara Fritchie Stakes winner Passage East finished third. Chasten won in a time 0.88 seconds faster than the other division, which was won by Eunomia. Cristian Torres had the winning mount aboard the Brad Cox-trained Juddmonte homebred.
LAUREL PARK
FIRST STAR: BUMP N RUN. Fought with Prince of Jericho in the stretch and prevailed in a third-level allowance sprint on Sunday, paying $43.60 in the process.
SECOND STAR: CRAB DADDY. Made it two wins in a row with a come-from-behind victory in a second-level allowance sprint earlier on the Sunday program.
THIRD STAR: JOSE VARGAS AND YEDSIT HAZLEWOOD. Both riders turned hat tricks this week: Vargas on Friday, Hazlewood on Sunday.
CHARLES TOWN
FIRST STAR: JULEE’S LEGACY. Led all the way in an open allowance dash for fillies and mares on Saturday for her third consecutive victory.
SECOND STAR: PAYMENGOLD. Set a constantly pressured pace and held on to win a West Virginia-bred allowance sprint on Thursday, winning at 8-1, the biggest price in the five-horse field.
THIRD STAR: RAY OF SUNSHINE. Captured a West Virginia-bred allowance sprint of his own on Wednesday in his 2026 debut.
COLONIAL DOWNS
FIRST STAR: INCREDIBOLT. Picked up his second career stakes win and moved up the Derby power rankings following his Virginia Derby victory.
SECOND STAR: BOTTLE OF ROUGE. Patience paid off in her Virginia Oaks triumph.
THIRD STAR: CHASTEN. This lightly-raced filly put herself on the map with her track-record win in the Sandy Bottom Stakes.
PARX RACING
FIRST STAR: WILD VINE. Idle since his third-place finish in the Kris Kringle Stakes, he returned to the races a winner in an open allowance route on Thursday.
SECOND STAR: INSURMOUNTABLE. Wore down early leader Factor U and Me In in the final strides to win a second-level Pennsylvania-bred allowance sprint earlier on the Thursday program.
THIRD STAR: DUKE OF GLOUCESTER. Also on Thursday, this gelding rallied from far off the pace to capture a second-level allowance route by 8 3/4 lengths.
