Mid-Atlantic three stars: February 23, 2026
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: TAJ MAHAL. Saturday’s co-feature at Laurel Park, the Miracle Wood Stakes for 3-year-olds at a mile, featuring a stirring stretch duel between Taj Mahal and Let’s Go Lando. The former, who broke his maiden on debut 15 days ago, made the rail and the lead and maintained a clear advantage as they rounded the far turn. At that point, favored Let’s Go Lando, coming off a first-level allowance win in his last start, made his move in the three-path and looked poised to roll by. However, Taj Mahal refused to let him by and kept him at bay throughout the long stretch run, prevailing by a neck in 1:39.47 over the sloppy track. He’s owned by the SF Racing/Starlight Racing ownership conglomerate, trained by Brittany Russell, and ridden by Sheldon Russell.
SECOND STAR: PEACH TIE. One race prior on the Laurel Saturday card, the Russells teamed up to win the Wide Country Stakes, for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs, with Peach Tie. The 3-5 favorite in the four-horse field broke from the outside post and raced on the lead three-wide in the early stages. She finally made her way towards the inside by the time they hit the turn, overtaking Momaxie and Velocity Girl. In the stretch, second favorite Law School made a run at her, but Peach Tie had more to give and held on to win by three lengths, running the distance on the off going in 1:27.80. She’s a perfect 5-for-5 on dirt, including a pair of stakes wins, with her only defeat coming in the Presque Isle Debutante Stakes on Tapeta last September. She’s a homebred for the estate of Brereton Jones.
THIRD STAR: SERENADE ME. Some of the top fillies and mares on the Charles Town grounds met in an open allowance contest at 6 1/2 furlongs on Friday. 7-5 favorite Maggie’s Girl made the rail and the lead without much trouble, with Double Spirit pressing the pace towards the rail. Serenade Me, who broke slowly, made her way to a prime stalking spot in the two-path up the backstretch, and poked her head in front at the top of the stretch. Maggie’s Girl fought hard on the inside, but Serenade Me pulled clear late under J.D. Acosta and won by two lengths. It was her first win of the year in two starts, following a narrow defeat to Miss Harriett last out, and her four career win in 12 races. She ran the distance over a sloppy track in 1:20.89 for owner Tim Freitag, trainer Ryan Gillespie, and jockey J.D. Acosta.
LAUREL PARK
FIRST STAR: TAJ MAHAL. Ran a huge race for just his second lifetime effort and looks like a serious Tesio contender.
SECOND STAR: PEACH TIE. Continued to build her resume with a sharp Wide Country win.
THIRD STAR: NO CENTS. This classy Jersey-bred veteran split horses late and wore down Prince of Jericho to win a third-level sprint on Saturday in his 8-year-old debut.
CHARLES TOWN
FIRST STAR: SERENADE ME. Sat the trip and converted to win Charles Town’s Friday feature.
SECOND STAR: OMAR COMIN. Rallied four-wide and got up in the last sixteenth to win a second-level sprint on Saturday.
THIRD STAR: PORK CHOP PETE. Took control and never looked back to easily win an allowance dash on Friday by 2 1/4 lengths in his 2026 debut.
PARX RACING
FIRST STAR: AOIFE’S MAGIC. Led all the way in a second-level sprint on Tuesday for her first victory since the 2023 Miss Behaviour Stakes; this daughter of Smarty Jones is now 5-for-14 lifetime.
SECOND STAR: SHADOW SURGE. Absolutely demolished a starter optional claiming field by 9 1/2 lengths going six furlongs on Wednesday to improve for 2-for-2 at the Parx meet.
THIRD STARS: ANGEL CASTILLO AND YEDSIT HAZLEWOOD. Both riders rode three winners on a card: Castillo on Monday, Hazlewood on Tuesday.
