Edy’s Flame seeks second stakes win in Casey Memorial
A contentious group of juvenile West Virginia-bred fillies will go postward Saturday night in the $75,000 James and Eleanor Casey Memorial Stakes. The rematch among several runners from the West Virginia Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders’ Classic could significantly impact the local 2-year-old filly division.
Four of the seven fillies—Edy’s Flame, Orange Canyon, Maskedandmummed, and Truth and Justice—exit that October 11 Breeders’ Classic, a race that was marred early when heavy favorite C’Mon Eileen veered out into the first turn. The incident carried both Orange Canyon and Truth and Justice several paths wide, severely hindering their chances, while Edy’s Flame, who escaped the trouble, saved ground most of the trip to to score by three lengths, with C’Mon Eileen second and Maskedandmummed third.

The Casey will serve as a proving ground for whether those hindered fillies can turn the tables with a clean trip.
Edy’s Flame, trained by Anthony Farrior for owner Richard Burnsworth, has been the model of professionalism, with two wins and a second from three starts. The daughter of Flameaway has tactical speed and a determined finish and already had a prior stakes placing when second to C’Mon Eileen in the 4 ½-furlong John McKee Memorial in September.
Stablemate Napule, a daughter of Independence Hall, broke her maiden last out and gives Farrior a solid 1-2 punch. Jeiron Barbosa, who rode Napule in her first two starts, departs to take the reins on Edy’s Flame, so veteran JD Acosta will take the mount on this miss.
Orange Canyon, from the powerhouse Jeff Runco barn, will add blinkers after her rough trip in the Breeders’ Classic. The Vekoma filly had previously dominated her maiden by nearly five lengths in the slop, and with Arnaldo Bocachica back aboard, she could return to top form if she avoids early crowding.
Maskedandmummed, representing Casey’s Legacy LLC and trainer Ronald Sigler, has been a steady presence in this division. A daughter of Candygram, she largely avoided the early trouble on WVBC night and stayed on for third. Stablemate B’s Wild Candy has yet to win but has improved with distance and earned her best placing when second behind Napule last out.
Truth and Justice, trained and bred by Cynthia McKee for Beau Ridge Farm, had little chance after the first-turn trouble in the Breeders’ Classic but had previously finished third in the McKee Memorial. A return to that form would put the Fiber Sonde filly squarely in the mix.
The field also includes Defiant Spirit, a daughter of Golden Years who was game in winning her debut for owner-breeder Carlos Lee and trainer William Straughn. Though lightly raced, she’ll be tested for class in this company.
The James and Eleanor Casey Memorial is carded as the seventh race on an eight-race card. The program kicks off at 7:00 p.m.
