Contenders look for key win in Pennsylvania Derby
The road to late-season supremacy for this year’s 3-year-old crop runs through Parx on Saturday in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1), and the $1 million test at 1 1/8 miles has drawn a deep field featuring multiple Triple Crown performers, rising stars, and proven graded stakes winners.
The Pennsylvania Derby is the 14th on a 15-race card and is joined by the Grade 1 Cotillion. Post time for the card is 11:05 a.m.
California shipper Baeza (John Shirreffs/Hector Berrios) has been knocking on the door in the biggest races. Third in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont, second in the Jim Dandy and Santa Anita Derby, he’s earned nearly $950,000 despite only one win, and his consistency against top-flight company makes him a major threat. In each of his last four races, he’s faced one or both of the division’s leaders, Sovereignty and Journalism.

Trainer Bob Baffert ships in Goal Oriented (Irad Ortiz Jr.), a lightly raced colt with upside. Winner of his first two starts, he has already run well in two classics, finishing fourth in the Preakness and third in the Haskell. With strong works at Del Mar through most of the summer, he looms a dangerous stalker.
Gosger (Brendan Walsh/Luis Saez), runner-up in both the Haskell and Preakness, has turned in gritty efforts against the division’s best. With nearly $900,000 earned from just five starts, he’s battle-tested and may get the right setup if the pace turns lively.
Magnitude (Steve Asmussen/Ben Curtis), a son of Not This Time who has already captured the Risen Star (G2) and Iowa Derby this season, will likely lead the charge early. He exits a third-place finish in the Travers (G1), where he set the pace before tiring, but his previous 108 and 105 Beyer speed figures and early foot make him a major player here.
Big Truzz (Brian Lynch/Javier Castellano), by Justify, comes in off an authoritative win in the Ellis Park Derby. He has shown class sprinting and routing, including a solid third in the Woody Stephens (G1), and could continue his upward trajectory.
Other contenders include Mo Plex (Jeremiah Englehart/J.D. Ramos), winner of the Ohio Derby (G3), who brings tactical speed and steady progression, and David of Athens (Brendan Walsh/Tyler Gaffalione), lightly raced but sharp in allowance company with potential for more. Curlin runner-up So Sandy (Cherie DeVaux) has turned in three good starts since getting a bit of a freshening.
Longshots Happily Delusional (Louis Linder/Paco Lopez) and Altobelli (James Nicholson/Angel Castillo ) round out the field.
This year’s Pennsylvania Derby shapes up as a clash of proven class and improving talent. Magnitude looks to control the race up front again, while Gosger and Goal Oriented bring strong finishing kicks. Baeza’s consistency in the classics makes him the measuring stick, and Big Truzz and Mo Plex are the wild cards who could jump into the divisional conversation with a big effort.
