We catch up on the latest jockey and trainer statistics from Colonial Downs. Who’s hot (and not)?
We’re halfway through the meet, so we’re beginning to see some recognizable trends. How does it look with several weeks left to go?
The numbers:
COLONIAL DOWNS JOCKEYS
Axel Concepcion stole the spotlight last week at Colonial Downs, winning six times from just 11 mounts to vault himself up the standings. Jorge Ruiz (4-for-18) and Forest Boyce (4-for-13) also put together productive weeks, while Mychel Sanchez and Paco Lopez each won three times. Among others, Johan Rosado, Ben Curtis, Martin Chuan, and Daniel Centeno added two victories apiece, and 15 riders won at least once….
Curtis continues to lead the colony with 26 wins overall, striking at nearly 25 percent and owning a meet-high 5.13 “added wins,” comparing actual victories to those predicted by the odds. Lopez remains his closest pursuer with 20 wins from 82 mounts, good for a matching 24 percent clip and 2.47 added wins. Sanchez sits third with 17 wins, while Concepcion has surged into the conversation with 15 wins and 3.11 added wins, underscoring his recent momentum. The range of all riders in added wins is 5.13 to (-2.60)…
In the earnings column, jump rider Graham Watters remains in a league of his own, having captured seven of eight starts while generating an eye-popping 54 percent of available purse money. Among flat riders, JG Torrealba tops the list with 20.35 percent of purses earned, edging Curtis (19.80) and Lopez (19.06). Sheldon Russell and Micah Husbands also continue to outperform the odds, each with more than 1.5 added wins, with Husbands pulling in nearly 19% of available purse money and Russell at over 15%…

COLONIAL DOWNS TRAINERS
Kelsey Danner had the hot hand last week at Colonial Downs, sending out three winners from as many starters. Michael Trombetta, Jonathan Thomas, Jamie Ness, and Mark Casse each added two victories, while 23 other conditioners chipped in with one win apiece. All told, 28 different trainers found the winner’s circle during the week.
For the meet, Trombetta continues to set the pace with 19 wins from 77 starters, striking at 25 percent and generating 5.71 “added wins,” a measure comparing actual victories to those predicted by betting odds. Brittany Russell remains in second with 15 wins from 70 starts (21 percent) and has 2.33 added wins. Michael Stidham (30.77 percent strike rate, 1.85 added wins), Jamie Ness (25 percent, 0.19 added wins), and Mark Casse (17.39 percent, 0.32 added wins) are tied with eight wins apiece, while John Fisher has made the most of limited opportunities with six wins from 12 starters and a gaudy 3.56 added wins. The range of added wins among all trainers runs from +5.71 to (-2.47)…
On the earnings front, Fisher’s runners continue to dominate, leading all trainers with 34 percent of available purse money won. Shug McGaughey sits close behind at 29 percent from a limited string, while Keith Desormeaux (26 percent) is tops among the more active barns. Trombetta, first in wins and added wins, is eighth in percentage of purse earned at 23.06 percent…
