Magic Wallet rallies to win Dover Stakes
Magic Wallet announced himself as a colt to watch Thursday at Delaware Park, powering home to earn his first stakes victory in the $75,000 Dover Stakes.
A homebred for Bill Bayne, the son of Divining Rod broke from the rail under Victor Carrasco and settled just behind the leaders in the early stages. After dropping back slightly on the turn, he launched a sweeping five-wide rally into the stretch, surging past leader Majestic Blue to win by 2 3/4 lengths in 1:12.07 for six furlongs over a good track.

It was the second win in as many starts for Magic Wallet, who dead-heated for victory in his July debut at Colonial Downs. Out of the seven-time winning mare In Dad’s Wallet, by Medaglia d’Oro, the colt has already earned over $80,000, a handy return on a runner by a $2,500 sire.
“He’s like a quiet horse, nothing crazy,” said trainer Claudio Gonzalez. “He even looks like he’s a five-year-old. He does everything right in the morning. You can see in the afternoon, too.”
Majestic Blue held second leading into the stretch, while Blue Forty Two rallied from well back late for third. Wall Art pulled up mid-race and walked off.
Off as the 7-5 favorite, Magic Wallet paid $4.80 to win. The exacta, with the top two wagering choices, returned $10.80 on a one-dollar wager.
The running time was seven-hundredths slower than the Blue Hen, for 2-year-old fillies, two races prior.
Gonzalez isn’t ready to map out the next step just yet for Magic Wallet, but he’s hopeful.
“It’s too soon to know. It depends how he comes back,” he said. “Maybe next week, we’ll know. But I think we’re going to be happy.”
