CT: Zip Start too much in Sylvia Bishop

Zip Start delivered a performance worthy of her 3-10 favoritism in Saturday’s $75,000 Sylvia Bishop Memorial Stakes at Charles Town Races, scoring a commanding 4 ¾-length victory over five other state-bred 3-year-old fillies.

The seven-furlong feature, named in honor of trailblazing trainer Sylvia Bishop—the first Black woman licensed as a trainer in the U.S.—marked Zip Start’s second stakes triumph and continued her impressive form at her home track.

Trained by Jeff Runco for Coleswood Farm Inc. and David Raim, and ridden with poise by Arnaldo Bocachica, the Upstart filly stalked the early pace while traveling two wide. Well in hand past the half-mile marker, she ranged up to take command midway on the far turn and widened her advantage through the stretch with only mild urging. She completed the distance in 1:25.81 over a fast track.

The win was her second in three starts this year and her second stakes victory, adding to last November’s James and Eleanor Casey Memorial. Zip Start improved her career record to 4-for-7 and increased her bankroll to $137,891.

Summon the Glam, sent off at 10-1, was the only rival to offer much of a challenge, rallying from off the pace and finishing a clear second. Italian Song, also trained by Runco, closed mildly between horses to take third. Over the Bull, Our Street Angel and early leader Our Miss Crossbow completed the order of finish.

Runco, a mainstay at Charles Town, dominated the race with a 1-3-6 finish and continued his productive stakes season. Zip Start became his fourth different stakes winner of 2025.

Bettors who backed Zip Start were rewarded with $2.60 to win, $2.20 to place, and $2.20 to show. The $1 exacta (6-5) with Summon the Glam returned a modest $3.80, while the $1 trifecta (6-5-4) paid $16.80. The $1 superfecta (6-5-4-1) returned $42.90.

Bred in West Virginia by Williams Racing Corp., Zip Start is a bay filly by Upstart out of the Exchange Rate mare Dancing for Glory. She is owned by Runco’s own Coleswood Farm and David Raim.
