Journalism made solid favorite in G1 Haskell

Preakness winner Journalism will try to add another top-level prize to his résumé as the 4-5 morning-line favorite in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million NYRA Bets Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Runner-up in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, the Curlin colt leads a field of eight in the 1 1/8-mile race that offers a “Win and You’re In” berth to the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Trained by Michael McCarthy and ridden by Umberto Rispoli, Journalism drew post 2 and enters off a sharp six-furlong workout at Santa Anita in 1:12. The $825,000 yearling has never finished worse than second in five starts this year and boasts $3.2 million in earnings.

“In these last three weeks he’s really thrived and excelled. He told us that he’s ready to get back on a plane and got across the country to run in the Haskell,” Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners said in a release. “We like the timing,.. We do like the spacing from the Haskell to what his next objective might be.”

A stiff challenge could come from Goal Oriented, Bob Baffert’s bid for a record-extending 10th Haskell win. Drawn widest in post 8, the Preakness fourth-place finisher will be ridden by Flavien Prat.

“I feel good about the way he’s coming into this race,” Baffert said. “Whether he’s good enough, we’ll see.”

Also entered is Gosger, second in the Preakness and a late-developing homebred for Harvey A. Clarke Racing Stables. Trainer Brendan Walsh, “I still don’t think we’ve got anywhere near the bottom of the horse.”

Grade 1 Blue Grass winner Burnham Square (5-1) adds further depth to the field for trainer Ian Wilkes, while longshots Bracket Buster, Wildncrazynight, National Law, and Kentucky Outlaw complete the lineup.

The Haskell anchors a 14-race Saturday card featuring six stakes (five graded). Post time for the Haskell is 5:45 p.m. ET and will be televised by NBC alongside the Grade 2 United Nations.
