Tough group to contest Rehoboth Stakes

A field of nine fillies and mares is set to line up in Saturday’s $100,000 Rehoboth Stakes at Delaware Park, a six-furlong dash that launches the Distaff Big Three Sprint Series. The series continues with the $125,000 Dashing Beauty Stakes on July 17 and concludes with the $150,000 Endine Stakes on September 27, offering a summer-long spotlight for sprinting distaffers.

Topping the field is R Disaster, the 3-1 morning line favorite, who exits a pair of hard-fought runner-up finishes in Grade 3 company. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., the Florida-bred daughter of Awesome Slew was most recently second in the Grade 3 Vagrancy at Aqueduct on May 4, where she battled throughout and was only narrowly outfinished. Her consistency—four wins and four seconds from eight starts—makes her a formidable presence.

Jorge Ruiz will ride.

The Rehoboth will mark the stakes bow of the improving Pleasant Embrace, who brings a four-race win streak into her toughest test to date. Away since mid-March, the Florida-bred Bucchero filly has been thriving since early 2024, with six wins in her last seven main-track starts.

“She had a few issues toward the end of last season, so we gave her a little bit of time and when she came back from that break, she came back much stronger and mature,” trainer Kelly Breen said in a release.  “Everything about her was bigger, stronger, faster and sharper.  She came back like the Bionic Woman.  Since then, she has just been rolling and she has answered every question we have given so far, so this is as good a time as any to find out if she can take it to another level.”

Sunday Girl, a narrow winner of the Correction Stakes at Aqueduct back in March, also merits strong consideration. The 6-for-8 New York-bred has only lost twice—but both times were on off tracks, which she may again encounter Saturday. She has been freshened for this return by trainer David Duggan and gets Katie Davis up.

Veteran mare St. Benedicts Prep is still seeking her first stakes win despite amassing over $500,000 in earnings. Trained by Linda Rice, the 5-year-old finished a close fourth in the same Vagrancy Stakes contested by R Disaster and Socially Selective, proving she belongs at this level.

The Bill Mott-trained Socially Selective visits Delaware after a disastrous outing in the Vagrancy, in which she reared up and was being held by the assistant starter when the gates opened. Previously third in the Grade 3 Distaff at Aqueduct, she could be a factor with a clean break.

Kentucky Derby-winning rider Junior Alvarado is named.

Alani comes in riding high off a sharp win at Laurel Park and has never been worse than third in 10 tries on the main track, while Drifaros looks to recapture her graded stakes-placed form for trainer Terri Pompay. Miss Harriett, a multiple stakes winner in Maryland, and Reagan’s Flame, a gritty type with solid allowance credentials, round out a competitive and diverse lineup.

The Rehoboth is the sixth race on a seven-race program. The Cape Henlopen, a grass stake originally scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed until June 14 because of the heavy rains in the region. Post time for the card is 12:35 p.m.
