Laurel Park to delay turf season launch at least a week

No turf just yet at Laurel Park.

The central Maryland track had been slated to start turf racing April 11, according to the track’s condition book.

But in a message to horsemen April 4, racing secretary Jillian Tullock said that the track will not begin turf racing until at least April 18. The culprit: wet weather.

“After evaluating the Turf Course, it is unfortunately still holding too much moisture,” Tullock wrote on WhatsApp. “With the forecasted low temperatures next week and more rain next weekend, we will not be taking turf entries for Fri 4/11-Sun 4/13.”

Tullock wrote that the racing office will convert the turf races to dirt at the same distances for purposes of taking entries.

Rain is currently in the forecast for this Sunday and next Friday and Saturday. Though this weekend is predicted to be relatively warm, the high temperature is expected to be sub-60 degrees Monday through Saturday.

Five of the 17 races in the book for April 18 are listed as turf, including a $47,000 maiden special weight for three-year-olds and up going 5 ½ furlongs.
