Charles Town picks and analysis: May 31, 2024
Picks and analysis for this evening’s card from Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races:
- DATE: May 31, 2024
- RACES ON CARD: 8
- CARRYOVERS: Jackpot Pick 6, $17,241
RACE 1
6. Stellars in Charge | Likely the one they’ll have to run down |
7. White Series | Improved try in last at shortest distance to date |
5. Northern Cardinal | Connections hesitant to expose him to being claimed, now trying him in special weight company at third different track |
RACE 2
6. Caliente Rum | Just missed in last versus similar |
1. Take Charge Erica | Maybe the barn switch will give this 8yo mare a boost |
2. Cowgirl Attitude | Drops to lowest level yet after struggling versus better; one of seven to run back from latest won follow-up |
RACE 3
5. Change Your Luck | Likely speed of the speed won last time entered for a nickel and should appreciate return to lesser company; Peltroche barn with a strong start to the year |
11. Hot Fudge Sonde | Warrants a look if drawing in off the AE; disappointed last couple but three back effort versus better wins here |
3. Hialeah Native | Hung out wide in last but barely missed two prior tries |
RACE 4
6. Never Grew Up | Exits productive heat that’s produced three next out winners; switches into ice-cold Carlisle barn that’s sure to heat up one of these days (22% off the trainer switch last five years) |
8. Common Prosperity | Won like a 3-10 should in last and finds good spot to tackle winners for the first time |
5. Simply Jack | Should appreciate straight never-won-two company after winners of last two outings had three and four wins each |
RACE 5
4. Nighttime Justice | Ran evenly versus better last out in a race that’s produced two next-out winners; won last time she faced nickel foes on dirt |
6. Rock Rose | Clearly the fastest here if she can find her old form, but drop to the bottom off a six-month break doesn’t instill confidence |
2. Complete Surprise | Drop to this level probably overdue; has back efforts that would win this |
RACE 6
3. Flat Discount | The Flat Out mare’s form is a bit in-and-out but better efforts put her in the mix; beaten a length two back in race that’s produced two next-out winners and won at this level in January |
7. Mrs. Del | Well-traveled mare will try to maintain form at third racetrack in as many starts; finished behind top choice in January, ahead of her in March |
1. Waterloo Rose | Her odds — 55-1 two back, 13-1 last out — suggest that this one’s chances of winning both were about 1/10th of one percent; how do you leave her out after that? |
RACE 7
8. Pork Chop Pete | Dead game in the Coin Collector when disposing of talented pace rival Marshall Peanut but unable to withstand late run of last year’s state-bred 2yo champ Jubawithatwist |
1. Indicator | Willing effort in the Coin Collector when outfooted early and hung out wide on the turn; flattened out a bit late |
3. Furreal | Half-bro to WV-bred millionaire Lucy’s Bob Boy dominated in flashy debut but has been away four months since; seems like that was a bit of a tepid group, while this is a tough spot to face winners first time |
RACE 8
3. Landon Jack | Sure likes to finish second (eight times in 22 starts versus just one win) and has done so in last two versus similar; might still be best of these |
12. Circle the Moon | Has faced better and could factor if drawing in off the AE |
6. Mims Hat Trick | Makes first start in 11 months and switches barns; best prior efforts fit here and came going 4 1/2 furlongs |
8. Tizafastbullet | Tired late after wide journey in first try versus winners; could face similar challenge here |
