MID-ATLANTIC THREE STARS: april 8
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
Region’s Best
FIRST STAR: THREES OVER DEUCES. A rock-solid field of third-level sprinters met over six furlongs in Saturday’s feature at Laurel Park. Threes Over Deuces, narrowly defeated in his last two starts, found the winner’s circle by a head. He rated off the leaders early, then moved three-wide on the turn and put a head in front at the eighth pole. Tenebris gamely fought back along the rail, but Threes Over Deuces fended him off and won for the 10th time in his 65-race career. He increased his earnings to $809,277 in the process. J.G. Torrealba was aboard for owner Pocket 3’s Racing LLC and trainer Gary Capuano.
SECOND STAR: QUINT’S BREW. Off an impressive maiden win on March 2, Quint’s Brew went off as the 1-5 choice in a one-mile first-level contest against fellow 3-year-olds at Laurel Friday. He made the front from the rail early on, then fended off some challenges on the far turn and maintained a clear advantage in the stretch. Despite racing a bit greenly late, he held clear to win by 3 1/4 lengths. By Country Life Farm’s Mosler out of Gansett (and one of three full siblings to win at Laurel this meet), he’s owned by his breeders, Paul Berube, Karen Linnell, and Heather Hunter of Spinnaker Hill Farm, and trained by Mike Gorham.
THIRD STAR: TEACHINTHERELEASE. Saturday’s feature at Charles Town, an allowance dash, was billed as a showdown between last year’s West Virginia-bred champion 2-year-old male Jubawithatwist, making his 3-year-old debut, and Marshall Peanut, who entered the race 4-for-4 lifetime. However, Teachintherelease upset the apple cart and won by a half-length after setting the early pace. He covered 4 1/2 furlongs over a fast track in 52.04, for his third victory in his last five starts and eighth win in 19 career tries. Antonio Lopez was aboard for owner/trainer Kristy Petty (who also owns and trains Jubawithatwist).
