Charles Town jockeys and trainers to watch

Charles Town Races switches to a three-day-per-week schedule in April and will host its first stakes of 2024.

As the new racing week kicks off, here’s a quick look at who’s hot among trainers and jockeys. We looked at the last three weeks of racing at Charles Town and compared how often jockeys and trainers won to what their takeout-adjusted odds would have predicted. Here’s what we found:

In wins, the leader over the last three weeks (and for the year to date) was Arnaldo Bocachica, who won with 10 of 35 mounts during the last three racing weeks. That allowed him to edge Christian Hiraldo, who was 9-of-41 during the period.

Angel Cruz led all riders in wins above expectations per 50 starts. He went 4-for-13 versus a win expectation of 2.85. That equates to 4.44 added wins per 50 starts.

Cruz was followed in wins above expectations per 50 starts by Wesley Ho (3.90 added wins per 50 starts), Victor Rodriguez (3.56), Luis Batista (3.39), and Juan Nunez (3.13).

At the other end of the spectrum were Denis Araujo (-6.02 wins above expectations per 50 starts), Keimar Trotman (-3.19), Fredy Peltroche (-3.03), Andres Chavez (-2.45), and Carlos Lopez (-2.38).

Interestingly enough, every rider to make at least 10 starts at Charles Town during the last three racing weeks won at least one race.

The same was not true among trainers. Three conditioners who made at least 10 starts were shut out, and several others to make between five and 10 also took the goose egg.

Mike Jones, Jr., Ronney Brown, and Jeff Runco all won six races during the last three weeks to pace the colony. Though his win percentage – 17.6% with a 6-for-34 ledger – was the lowest of that trio, Jones had the highest wins above expectations per 25 starts of the group. He recorded 1.13 wins above expectations per 25 starts during the period.

In terms of wins above expectations per 25 starts for all trainers, the leader was Russell Davis, whose 2-for-7 ledger equated to 5.57 wins above expectations per 25 starts. He was followed by Flint Stites (4.14 wins above expectations per 25 starts), Anthony Rideoutt (3.36), Ollie Figgins (2.64), and Ronald Sigler (2.46), who had the highest wins above expectations of trainers making at least 10 starts in the last three weeks.

At the other end were John Carlisle (-4.07), Cynthia McKee (-3.50), Christopher Keller (-3.23), Tim Shanley (-2.32), and Kristy Petty (-2.22). All were winless during the period.
