With more wins for the week than any other jockey, Penn National’s leading rider, Angel R. Rodriguez was voted Jockey of the Week November 6 through November 12 by the panel of racing experts.

The honor recognizes jockeys for riding accomplishments and who are members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.

Riding primarily at Penn National and Parx, Rodriguez began his winning ways on Wednesday at Parx with a victory in race 5 aboard Madurai in a maiden special weight for trainer Todd Beattie. Then it was a two hour commute to his next riding assignment at Penn National’s evening card where he had six mounts including wins in race 5 aboard Ughrouda for trainer Timothy Kreiser and race 6 with If We Get Lucky for trainer Ricardo Ramirez.

Rodriguez continued riding at his home track, Penn National, on Thursday posting two wins for leading trainer Brandon Kulp, the fifth race with Good Source and the seventh race as the pilot on Spinning Musician.

Rodriguez wrapped up his week on Friday at Penn National with four wins from seven mounts. Rodriguez won the first race with Nick Papagiorgio for trainer Brandon Kulp as well as the second race aboard Over and Thunder again for trainer Brandon Kulp. That trainer/jockey duo won again in the fifth race with Jeanetteo. Rodriguez’s ninth win of the week came in the sixth race for trainer Elisha Perez aboard Drosselmoon.

The talented and personable Rodriguez posted weekly statistics of 19-9-4-1 with a 47% win percentage and an impressive 73.5% in-the-money percentage.

A native of Puerto Rico, the multiple stakes-winning Rodriguez will celebrate his 37th birthday on Sunday. After winning his first race in Puerto Rico he came state-side initially in 2001 for a few mounts at Charles Town. He came back to the states in 2006 riding his first winner outside of Puerto Rico at Aqueduct on March 20, 2006.

Other nominees for Jockey of the Week included Manny Franco who won the Gr. III Pebbles at Aqueduct, Jose Lezcano who won the Gr. II Red Smith at Aqueduct, Jose L. Ortiz with a Gr. III win in the Long Island also at Aqueduct and John Velazquez who won the Gr. III River City at Churchill Downs.
