RACE NUMBERCONTENDERSCOMMENTS
Race 67-4-6-2The broodmare Lucky Notion has been a productive one for owner-breeder Dan McConnell. She’s the dam of multiple graded winner Prince Lucky, and also the hard-hitting Saint Main Event, who earned nearly $300,000. She’s also the dam of first-time starter #7 Queen Lucky (3-1). The Cal Lynch trainee has been training well enough at Fair Hill, and Lynch has a 19% strike rate with first-timers… Another firster here is #4 Sophia Lauren (4-1). The Mike Trombetta trainee has a lengthy work tab in preparation, and while Trombetta’s record with first-time starters is a middling 11%, it’s good to see go-to rider Victor Carrasco along for the event… We’re not fans of the jump in class, but that was a solid debut for #6 Aruma (5-1). The Il Villano filly led leaving the furlong grounds before tiring to third and should be fitter today… #2 Rose Legacy (7-2) makes her second start with both Lasix and blinkers and had an excuse in her last. But she also has yet to be better than fourth in three career tries…
Race 83-5-6-4In her debut, #3 Abidale (5-2) ran on willingly to be fourth after lagging well behind in the early going. She finished a length-and-a-half behind morning line favorite Twodogsfourcats that day and owns the right to improve in her second start… Trainer Juan Vazquez has a pair in here in #5 Memento Mi (10-1) and #2 St Maarten Girl (6-1). Both are making their second starts; both ran in the same race Nov. 9, both finishing up the track after lagging well behind early and then rallying a bit in the lane. Both get Lasix on for the first time here, They appear, more or less, to be the same horse, and it appears neither was quite primed to win back in November. If we have a slight preference for Memento Mi, it’s because she seems to have been outworking St Maarten Girl in recent days, but honestly, look for both to improve today… #4 Irie Empress (4-1) keeps improving as she moves up the class ladder, but we’d be more partial to her if she weren’t stepping up again…
