- Maryland Juvenile: A mystery solved, decades laterSaturday’s Maryland Juvenile Stakes should be a fun race, but it’s unlikely to launch the careers of two Classic winners, like the 1982 edition did.
RACE NUMBER | CONTENDERS | COMMENTS |
Race 2 | 4-6-3-5 | Really good effort last time out by #4 Big Boy Potts (3-1) to be first past the post before being DQed for bumping. This one was pressed all the way but would not yield and earned the hard-fought win. It’s pretty hard to argue with a horse who’s already won a maiden race facing maidens… #6 Mark Did It (20-1) got absolutely left at the gate in his debut, which, of course, is the kiss of death going 4 1/2 furlongs. Honestly, though, he was so far out of it early, he’d have been hard pressed to make up the ground at any distance. That said, he ran on pretty nicely later, shaved his deficit in half, and galloped out well. Look for a step forward today… Niall Saville sends out #3 Tapped Off (4-1) first off the claim. This one was right there for the first five furlongs of his last, a $30k maiden claimer at Keeneland, before fading in the final furlong. We’ll see how the cutback works for him here… #5 Angusonic (6-1) is showing a couple of OK works in preparation for his debut here for trainer Paul McEntee… |
Race 7 | 3-6-4-1 | That was a flashy debut for #3 Snowy Juba Cat (5-2). The Curtis Bass trainee ran away and hid from her rivals, winning by six, which is a significant margin in a 4 1/2-furlong event. Any improvement at all — or even just a repeat — would likely make her two-for-two… #6 Denali d’Oro (3-1) is another who looked good graduating last out, in this case in her second career start. She doesn’t appear to have quite the early lick our top choice does, which may complicate matters for her, but she ran pretty well in her debut stalking the pace… #4 My Pretty Eyes (2-1) should appreciate getting back to a one-turn sprint after an unsuccessful two-turn try on WVBC night. She’s been second twice against similar… #1 Got Any (20-1) got a bit of a break after two disappointing tries, but three back was second against similar. A return to that would put her in the mix today at long odds… |
