Longtime Thoroughbred auctioneer Steve Dance died Tuesday, May 25. He was 78.
Dance, a fixture at Fasig-Tipton auctions for nearly 50 years, died at his home in Jarrettsville, MD. The cause is believed to have been a heart attack.

Maskedandmummed swept two November stakes at Charles Town, and a pair of other juveniles impressed in graduating in the muddled 2yo scene there.
Dance also owned and operated the Milton J. Dance Co., an auction house started by his grandfather in 1912. Steve Dance had joined his grandfather and uncle, Milton “Laddie” Dance, Jr., in the business in 1961.
Shortly therafter, Laddie Dance left the business to purse a full-time career in the Thoroughbred world, and Steve Dance joined Fasig-Tipton in 1972.
Survivors include his wife Nancy; daughters Erica and Whitney; son Lee; stepdaughter Layne; and brothers Andy, Scott, and Tom.
In lieu of flowers, the auction company requested donations be made in Dance’s name to Baltimore County 4-H Fair, c/o Ms. Janice Coroneos, 1801 Ridgeway Ave., Lutherville, MD 21093 or Harford Countty 4-H Program, 3525 Conowingo Road, Suite 600, Street, MD 21154.
