Classic winner Bee Bee Bee and Pimlico Special winner Include are the newest members selected for induction into the Maryland Thoroughbred Hall of Fame, as voted on by a committee of Maryland racing industry members coordinated by the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and Maryland Racing Media Association.
The two will be celebrated during a ceremony at the Timonium race meet, after the fifth race, on Friday, Sept. 4.
“We are so proud to recognize the accomplishments of Bee Bee Bee and Include as this year’s inductees to the Maryland Thoroughbred Hall of Fame,” said Cricket Goodall, executive director of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association. “They represent some of the top families in our industry, both human and equine.”

Bee Bee Bee shocked the racing world in 1972 with a front-running performance in the Preakness Stakes, upsetting Kentucky Derby winner and overwhelming favorite Riva Ridge. Carrying the silks of William S. Farish III, Bee Bee Bee became the seventh Maryland-bred winner of the Pimlico classic. He was voted that year’s Maryland-bred Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old, after a championship season at 2.
Trained throughout his career by Del Carroll, the dark bay colt was bred by Chicagoan William S. Miller, who maintained a small number of broodmares with Carey Rogers’ at Goodwill Farm in Monkton. He was by Miller’s Kentucky-based multiple stakes winner Better Bee out of the *Nizami II mare Paula — a cross that had worked well before, having already produced stakes winners Abe’s Hope and Tusi Bella.
Bee Bee Bee kicked off his career for Miller at 2, getting his first win at Pimlico in May, followed by scores Aqueduct, Timonium and Hawthorne Park. He won Timonium’s All Maryland Handicap for juveniles under at staggering 128 pounds. In his prior start he set a Timonium track record for seven furlongs while winning by 17 lengths. In his final start of the year, he shipped to Chicago and won the Hawthorne Juvenile Stakes at Hawthorne Park.
Sold to Farish in January 1972, Bee Bee Bee remained in Carroll’s barn. After a dismal early campaign in Florida, a return to Pimlico and a win in the Survivor Stakes proved to his trainer to give the Preakness a try. Ridden by Eldon Nelson, Bee Bee Bee led at every call over the sloppy track at odds of nearly 19-1. He added a victory in the Patriot Stakes at Liberty Bell less than a month later and completed his season with a second in that track’s Minuteman Stakes in July. He returned the next year to win twice in a dozen starts, with his best stakes performance a second in Penn National’s Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup. Retired with a record of 11 wins, eight seconds and two thirds in 31 starts, and $281,098 in earnings, he was exported to Japan to stand at stud.
Robert E. Meyerhoff’s homebred Include was the 2001 Maryland-bred Horse of the Year and champion older male off a season that saw him become the fourth Maryland-bred in history to win the Grade 1 Pimlico Special. Those before him – Challedon, Vertex and Cigar – are all in the Maryland Thoroughbred Hall of Fame. He is the fourth Meyerhoff-bred to be inducted, joining Broad Brush, Concern and Richard’s Kid.
A son of Meyerhoff’s homebred multimillionaire and leading sire Broad Brush trained by Hall of Famer Grover G. “Bud” Delp, Include won five handicaps over five consecutive months at age 4. He launched his season at the Fair Grounds in February in the Whirlaway, followed by a victory in the Grade 2 New Orleans. Sent to Pimlico, he scored in the Jennings before taking the Grade 1 Special, in which he defeated a field that included Albert the Great and Milwaukee Brew. It was then on to Suffolk Downs and a score in the Grade 2 Massachusetts.
He bankrolled $1,435,400 in 2001, with eight top-three finishes in nine starts. His three stakes-placings were all graded. He concluded that season with a second, by a neck, in the Grade 2 Clark at Churchill Downs.
A stakes winner at 3 and a repeat winner of the Jennings at 5, Include retired with a career mark of 10 wins, a second and four thirds in 20 starts while earning $1,659,560. He was one of five stakes winners for his dam, 2001 Maryland Broodmare of the Year Illeria, whose 13 foals included nine stakes performers.
Include entered stud at Airdrie Stud in Kentucky in 2003 and remained there his entire career until his death at age 25. He sired nearly 60 black-type winners and the earners of more than $67 million, led by Grade 1-winning millionaire Panty Raid, the dam of multimillionaire Grade 1 winner Proxy.

Under the collaboration of the Maryland Horse Breeders Association and Maryland Racing Media Association, the Hall of Fame was initiated in 2013 as a means of celebrating the excellence of state-bred Thoroughbred horses and debuted with an inaugural class of 12. There are now 40 members. Bee Bee Bee and Include join MTHOF members Alma North, Awad, Ben’s Cat, Broad Brush, Caesar’s Wish, Caveat, Challedon, Cigar, Concern, Conniver, Dave’s Friend, Deputed Testamony, Devil’s Bag, El Gran Senor, Find, Gallorette, Heavenly Cause, Jameela, J. O. Tobin, Kauai King, Little Bold John, Politely, Richard’s Kid, Safely Kept, Shine Again, Smart Angle, Smoke Glacken, Social Outcast, Star de Naskra, Twixt, Vertex, What a Summer and Youth and steeplechasers Elkridge, Good Night Shirt, Jay Trump, Mountain Dew and Tuscalee.
