Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: BABY VINO. In spite of severe thunderstorms which caused multiple delays, more than 35,000 came to Monmouth Park on Saturday for their signature race, the historic Haskell Stakes. Baby Vino, who won Monmouth’s Pegasus Stakes last out, won by a half-length at 28-1, for the biggest Haskell upset in over 40 years. Preakness winner Napoleon Solo set the pace, while Baby Vino raced off of him on the inside. Napoleon Solo left the rail open on the far turn, and Baby Vino took advantage, engaging his rival in a stretch duel. Baby Vino took command at the eighth pole and held off the dogged challenge of Napoleon Solo, who held second, 3 1/2 lengths clear of third-place Iron Honor. The stewards looked at bumping between the top two in the stretch, but allowed the result to stand. The winner, stabled at Monmouth with trainer Lindsay Schultz, ran 1 1/8 miles on a sloppy surface in 1:50.18 for owners Cosmo Stable and Delta Squad Racing LLC. Jorge Vargas had the winning ride, for his first grade 1 victory.

SECOND STAR: BOOK’EM DANNO. The day before the Haskell was designated “Book’em Danno” day at Monmouth, as the Jersey-bred star raced in the Mr. Prospector Stakes, his first start in his home state since his 2-year-old season. Off a victory in the True North Stakes at Saratoga last out, he went off as the 1-10 favorite against five rivals. He battled for the early lead with second choice and fellow Mid Atlantic-bred Quint’s Brew, dueling through a first quarter-mile in 22.42 and a first half-mile in 45.25. Quint’s Brew gave Book’em Danno all he could handle from his inside, but the latter proved too much, and he won by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:09.37. Quint’s Brew held second, with Jersey-bred Boardwalk Jack third to complete a Mid-Atlantic trifecta. The winner, who was bred by Greg Kilka and Bright View Farm, improved to 12-4-1 in 19 career starts with earnings of $2,270,425. He’s owned by Atlantic Six Racing LLC, trained by Derek Ryan, and ridden by Paco Lopez.

THIRD STAR: SPLENDORA. Although Quint’s Brew couldn’t quite get it done in the Mr. Prospector, Splendora gave the Maryland-bred contingent a stakes victory at Monmouth this weekend. She captured the Molly Pitcher Stakes by 5 1/2 lengths in a race with very little drama. Sent off as the 3-10 favorite, she cleared to the rail and the lead from post position seven and quickly opened up a clear early lead. In the stretch, with no one mounting a challenge, she opened up further and further and hit the wire in front as much the best. She ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.75 on a track officially labeled “fast” but sealed and taking on moisture. She’s now 4-for-5 on the year, having previously won the Wayne Lukas Stakes and the Beholder Mile at Santa Anita Park, along with the Shawnee Stakes at Churchill Downs. Bred by Stuart Grant’s The Elkstone Group LLC, she’s owned by Boyd Racing LLC and By Talla Racing LLC, trained by Bob Baffert, and ridden by Flavien Prat.

SECOND STAR: NATURE’S CANDY. Set the pace and held sway from there to take the Dr. Teresa Garofalo Memorial Stakes later on the Saturday program.

THIRD STAR: PONDER AND DREAM. Crushed the Lil E. Tee Stakes field by 14 3/4 lengths on Saturday.
