DEL: Cedeno registers first stakes win of comeback

McCready, Miss Fulton Gal score in off-turf events

A pair of Delaware Park stakes were pulled off the turf and contested on the main track Saturday as a result of persistent rain.

That turned out to be good news for Miss Fulton Gal – already a stakes winner on dirt – and McCready, who had never previously raced on dirt.

Novogratz Racing Stables’ McCready notched his first career stake victory in the $150,000 Kent Stakes. The race had been originally scheduled to be run on the turf but was transferred to the main track due to a steady rain which started at the beginning of the race card and continued until early in the afternoon.

With former six-time Delaware Park leading jockey Carol Cedeno astride, the 3-year-old son of Practical Joke won by 2 ½-lengths and returned $16.80 as the fifth choice in the field of seven. Kravitz, with Kevin Gomez, finished second, a neck in front of the 2-to-1 favorite Chambersville, with Christopher Elliott, in third.

The Kentucky-bred conditioned by locally based trainer McLean Robertson raised his career record to three wins from five starts with earnings of $201,870.

The win was the first stakes win for Cedeno during this comeback season. Last Sept. 27 she suffered an injury in a spill at the Meadowlands that kept her out until March of this year.

“This is an incredible win for me,” said Cedeno, who resides in nearby Middletown, Delaware. “This is my home track and I live in the area, so to get a victory here like this is especially nice. The horse got the job done though. He was super. When I watched the replays of his prior races, I noticed he breaks good but not good enough to go right to the lead, so today I was planning to be patient and to get him to relax. He got relaxed and when I got to the 5/8ths pole I knew I had a lot of horse. When we got to the 3/8ths pole, he took off and I knew we had it.”

Two races prior, Trott Racing Stable, Five Sisters Farm, and John Polizos’ Miss Fulton Gal notched her second career stakes victory in the $150,000 Christiana Stakes at Delaware Park today.

With Raul Mena aboard, the 3-year-old daughter of Rock Your World won by 2 1/4-lengths and returned $17.20 as the third choice in the field of five. The 3-to-5 favorite Soloist, with Christopher Elliott, finished second. It was another seven lengths farther back to Making Daisys, with Carol Cedeno, in third.

Miss Fulton Gal covered the mile and an eighth in 1:54.10 over a sloppy track.

The Kentucky-bred conditioned by locally-based trainer Michael Gorham raised her career mark to four wins from 11 starts with earnings of $258,450. In her prior start, Miss Fulton Gal had finished fifth in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan, and she certainly appreciated the class relief Saturday.

“We know she likes the dirt and if the race was going to come off, it would favor us,” said winning trainer Michael Gorham. “She is a nice filly and she does everything right. She is perfect to be around. She has run in some really nice races against some tough 3-year-old fillies, and she brings her best effort every time. Hopefully, she can keep progressing and who knows where she will take us?”
