FIRST STAR: NAPOLEON SOLO. The 151st Preakness Stakes, and the first edition of the race held at Laurel Park, took place on Saturday. Napoleon Solo, the winner of last year’s Champagne Stakes, defeated the largest Preakness field in 15 years by 1 1/4 lengths. He sat a perfect trip, rating in second in the early stages while Taj Mahal, the biggest-priced favorite in Preakness history at 4.70-1, set fast early fractions. Paco Lopez asked Napoleon Solo for run on the far turn, took the lead in hand, and held off the bid of Iron Honor to win. Chip Honcho was third, while Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Ocelli was fourth. The winner ran 1 3/16 miles in 1:58.69 and improved to 3-0-0 in five starts with earnings of $1,560,520. He’s owned by Gold Square LLC and trained by Chad Summers.

SECOND STAR: MY MISS MO. One day before, Laurel played host to the 1 1/8 mile George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes. My Miss Mo, previously second in a pair of Gulfstream Park stakes races, delivered the goods this time, winning by 1 3/4 lengths. Sent off as the slight favorite at 2.50-1, she rated in second early on as longshot Savor It set the pace. She made her move on the far turn and dueled with Jumping the Gun on the final turn and in the stretch. She eventually pulled clear of that rival and won, going the distance in 1:52.15. Jumping the Gun held second, while A.P.’s Girl came on for third. The winner is now 2-3-0 in six career starts, with this being her first stakes win, to go with earnings of $328,030. Tyler Gaffalione was up for owners Averill Racing LLC, Mathis Stable LLC, and Tristan De Meric and trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.

THIRD STAR: NAVAJO WARRIOR. Earlier on the Friday card, older males traveled 1 3/16 miles in the Pimlico Special. 13-10 favorite Navajo Warrior delivered on his promise in an impressive 2 3/4-length win. He easily made the rail and the lead under Flavien Prat, setting an opening quarter-mile fraction of 24.60 and a first half-mile of 48.40. Last year’s winner, Awesome Aaron, made a move after him on the final turn, and Maclean’s Rook also made a serious bid at the top of the lane. However, Navajo Warrior fended both of them off to win in a time of 1:56.61. He’s owned by a conglomerate led by BAG Racing Stables and trained by Saffie Joseph Jr.
