Napoleon Solo burst onto the national scene last fall when he dominated the Champagne Stakes by 6 ½ lengths, stamping himself as one of the division’s brightest prospects. His three-year-old campaign, however, has been less convincing. He faded to fifth in both the Fountain of Youth and Wood Memorial after showing early speed in each race.
The gray colt is by Liam’s Map out of a mare by Scat Daddy. That pedigree leans more toward brilliance and speed than grinding stamina, though Liam’s Map has sired some capable routers. Purchased for only $40,000, Napoleon Solo has already far exceeded expectations.
Napoleon Solo almost certainly will be part of a contested pace. His best races have come when he controls things early, but several rivals share similar preferences. If he can relax and carry his speed farther, he becomes dangerous again.
