Quint’s Brew, Point Dume could meet in General George

Laurel Park’s Saturday stakes action set the stage for a possible marquee rematch on Feb. 14, when Jennings Stakes winner Quint’s Brew and Fire Plug Overnight Handicap hero Point Dume could square off in the $200,000 General George Stakes.

Quint’s Brew made it two straight victories in the $100,000 Jennings, edging Blue Kingdom by a nose after stalking a lively pace and rallying late under apprentice Yedsit Hazlewood. Trained by Ned Allard, the Maryland-bred 5-year-old showed grit despite a less-than-perfect trip, stopping the clock in 1:37.37.

“That was a good effort,” Allard said. “He bobbled a little bit today, but it probably worked to his advantage.”

The win followed his dominant 2025 Jennings score that launched him to a General George victory, and Allard indicated a title defense next month is a strong possibility. Following last year’s General George, Quint’s Brew – named for the beer quaffed by the shark-hunter in the movie Jaws – ran second in a pair of graded stakes in New York before heading to the sidelines.

Quint’s Brew, the 1-2 favorite, now has five wins from nine starts and earnings of more than $420,000.

Later on the card, Point Dume proved just as resolute in the $100,000 Fire Plug Overnight Handicap at 6½ furlongs. With the expected pace compromised at the break, jockey Angel Cruz put the Tim Kreiser trainee into the fray early, and Point Dume outgamed Full Moon Madness before holding off Chipotle by a half-length in 1:17.09.

The victory carried added weight for owner Bryan Bushey, who was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in spring 2024 and given just six months to live. Yet Saturday he was at Laurel to enjoy the moment.

“He doesn’t give up,” Bushey said of Point Dume. “That’s one thing that’s important to this horse. That’s like me. I’m not giving up.”

Bushey claimed Point Dume for $40,000 out of a runner-up effort at Penn National last July 4. He has since won the Michael P. Ballezzi Appreciation Mile at Parx and finished second in that track’s Kris Kringle Stakes on New Year’s Eve prior to the Fire Plug.

Overall Point Dume has nine wins from 29 starts and more than $430,000 banked. He paid $8.60 to win.

Nominations for the General George close on Jan. 31.
