We catch up on the latest jockey and trainer statistics from Maryland. Who’s hot (and not)?
Here are the final 2025 statistics for jockeys and trainers plying their trades in Maryland at all three tracks, Laurel, Pimlico, and Timonium.
The numbers:
MARYLAND JOCKEYS
Yedsit Hazlewood had a riding triple on each of the last three racing days in Maryland to cap off a banner rookie season… Hazlewood won both the Timonium and Laurel fall meets to close the season and led all riders with 108 wins, well clear of Sheldon Russell (80), with Jevian Toledo and Jaime Rodriguez, currently riding in New York, tied with 75 wins during the year… Mychel Sanchez won three times during the last racing weekend, and Russell and Carlos Lopez won two each… Overall, 14 riders won at least once during the final weekend… Hazlewood posted 21.11 added wins in 2025 — comparing actual wins to the number of wins projected by mounts’ odds — which was well ahead of any other rider… Russell was second (9.66), followed by Jorge Ruiz (9.61), who’s now riding at Gulfstream Park… Raul Mena (6.85) and Ismerio Villalobos (5.10) round out the top five… The range of all riders is 21.11 to (-8.47)… Sheldon Russell led all riders by earning 22.85% of available purse money during his races… Among the 35 riders with at least 50 starts in Maryland during 2025, Arnaldo Bocachica was second with 20.15% of purses earned, followed by Hazlewood (20.11%), with Jaime Rodriguez (17.21%) and Jorge Ruiz (16.53%) rounding out the top five… The statistics below are for the full year…

MARYLAND TRAINERS
Trainers Brittany Russell, Jamie Ness, and Gary Capuano each won three times over closing weekend to lead all conditioners… Jose Corrales won a pair, and overall 19 trainers won at least once during the final weekend… Russell finishes the year with 109 wins, easily the most of any Maryland trainer… Jamie Ness (86) ends in second, with Kieron Magee (47) in third, with Jose Corrales and Hugh McMahon rounding out the top five… Russell finished with 19.22 added wins in Maryland, comparing actual wins to wins projected by runners’ odds, followed by Gary Capuano (8.23) and Michael Gorham (6.59)… McMahon and Horacio De Paz round out the top five… The range of all trainers this year was 19.22 to (-6.77)… Among the 43 trainers with at least 50 starters in Maryland this year, Gary Capuano’s runners, who won at a 34% clip, pulled in 26.80% of available purse money, the most of any trainer… Brittany Russell (25.12%) was next, followed by John Salzman, Jr. (20.39%)… Jamie Ness and Robbie Bailes rounded out the top five… The figures below are for the full year in Maryland…
